Pioneer Park is the oldest park in Newport and has family, friendly amenities that include a playground, space for picnics, including pavilions and grills, and sports courts. This park has some fun features that many modern parks have abandoned, including a merry-go-round and barrel run. The jungle gym equipment is a good size and, although actually a standard metal and plastic equipment, it has a pioneer feel to it because of the wood-coloring. The playground floor is sand. Also located at Pioneer Park is the Newport Heritage Monument, which is displayed by a large rock and the City of Newport’s seal. Enclosed in that area is a time capsule to be opened in the year 2100. The park has two pavilions which can be reserved. A returnable deposit is required. Pavilions have electricity, charcoal grills and running water. Picnic tables seat 100 in the larger pavilion and 25 people in the smaller. This park hosts Pioneer Day annually in August. The festival is a family-friendly day that includes picnicking, games and crafts for kids, and music and entertainment. Find More Twin Cities Festivals & Fairs in our Year-Round Family Guide.
