Bison at Minneopa State Park

One of the highlights of visiting Minneopa State Park is getting a view of the park’s bison herd, which is part of the Minnesota Bison Conservation Herd. The herd hovers around 30 and 40 animals, mainly females and calfs. Park rangers keep one bull in this herd, which is changed out every few years to add genetic diversity to the herd.

Bison Drive Road & Bison Radio

The Bison Road is open for visitors to take self-guided drives every day (except Wednesday) from 9am to 3:300pm. Visitors can tune in to the “bison radio station” to learn about the herd as they drive the range. The best times to visit are around 9am or late afternoon, when the bison are most active moving around and eating.
