Matthews Park has family friendly amenities that include three separate playgrounds, a recently-updated wading pool, a path through a garden, broomball, and sports fields. The playground was upgraded during the summer of 2017 with the center playground being finalized in late September. The completed project includes new playground equipment for three existing areas, new playground surfacing and new accessible pathways. This is one of the air conditioned rec centers. Public rooms include a gym, a community kitchen, a craft room and a meeting room and multipurpose room. Rooms can be rented for birthday parties and other private events. Find permit requirements and special use fees, on MPRB’s website. The Minneapolis Park Board acknowledges that sledding occurs in non-designated parks, but reminds patrons that this is “at your own risk”. They ask that sledders use caution when using non-designated sledding areas; never sled toward traffic and avoid hills with trees nearby. We would agree with these cautions. With that understood, this park has a gentle grade that flows into the park rather than toward the street. Some areas are pretty woodsy, but others are relatively clear. For more sledding locations, read our Twin Cities Sledding Hills Guide. This park participates in the summer meals program. Meal times are subject to change each year. Find the most up-to-date summer meals formation here. Because this park is adjacent to Seward Montessori School, the pool normally opens after school releases for the summer and closes before the new school year begins. The new pool was finished in the summer of 2017.Matthews Park Playground
