Bloomington's Brookside Park is across 98th street from the Bloomington Ice Garden and Marsh Lake Park and incorporates over 22 acres on its own. Family friendly amenities include a playground and sports fields/courts. In the winter the city maintains ice rinks. Offstreet parking is found off of Xerxes Avenue right next to the playground.
Ice Skating at Brookside Park
The City of Bloomington maintains both a general and a hockey rink at this location from mid December to mid February as weather permits. It is only open on weekends and school release days, but is staffed and has floodlighting at those times. Open hours are Noon to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and school release days and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. There are also special hours of noon to 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve (12/24), New Years Eve (12/31) and Monday, February 5th.
Brookside Park Community Garden
Community garden plots are available to rent. They are located at the south end of the park near Bloomington Covenant Church. These plots tend to sell out. Return renters get priority and can reserve in January and February. In March, any remaining plots are opened up to the public (March 1st for Bloomington Residents; March 15th for anyone). These plots are not super close to the playground, but close enough that older children could go off and play when they are done helping in the garden or that a family could walk over for playtime together after working together.
