The Belwin Conservancy is a nonprofit organization located in Afton that protects land from development and connects people with nature through immersive programs and family-friendly environmental education. As part of their mission, they manage a 1,500-acre bison herd and offer events, trails, and educational opportunities.  Their trails are free and open to the public year round. A seasonal Bison Observation Platform is open mid-May through September. The site is also home to a large athletic field and observatory.

Belwin Conservancy’s Mission & Impact

The Belwin Conservancy’s mission is to conserve the natural heritage of the St. Croix River Valley for the benefit of present and future generations. It has protected over 3,000 acres of land in the St. Croix River Valley. They have also provided environmental education programs to over 10,000 people.

Ideas for Family Fun at Belwin Conservancy

  1. Hike the Trails. The trails range from just over 1 mile — perfect for hiking with young kids — to the 5-mile Stagecoach Prairie trail.
  2. View the Bison. Visit during warmer months to get a view of the grazing Bison from the observation platform in the viewing area. Belwin recommends bringing binoculars and parking in the Bison Observation parking lot.
  3. Schedule a family visit around an event.
