Twin Cities Free Weekend Events for January 24-25

Get out and enjoy the events of the St. Paul Winter Carnival this weekend! Many of the events are free and open to the public and several are aimed especially at families with young children. Saturday, January 24

Winter Carnival Kids Day
@ Landmark Center
75 W 5th Street, Saint Paul, MN 55102

Hours: 2 – 6pm
Ages: Appropriate for all ages
Details: Landmark Center’s Cortile will be hosting bouncy houses, crafts and live entertainment if you need to warm up from exploring the delights of Rice Park (the icy Royal Courtyard, for one, and the King Boreas Grande Day Parade, concluding in Rice Park at 4pm).

Free Family Music Series: Jazz Kids!
@ MacPhail Center for Music
501 S. 2nd St., Minneapolis, MN 55401

Hours: Full program runs 10am – noon with performances at 10 & 11.
Ages: Appropriate for all ages.
Details: The art and instrument explore areas will be open at 10, 10:45, 11 and 11:45 a.m. between jazzy performances of kid favorites by MacPhail faculty. Free sample lessons are offered to kids before and after each concert, and snacks will be served. Click here for parking and directions.

Music & Melody Makers
@ Minnesota Youth Symphonies
975 South Snelling Ave., Saint Paul, MN 55116

Hours: 9:00 – 10:30am
Ages: Open to ages 3-14 only, please
Details: Pre-registration is requested for this event. Kids will have the chance to try out orchestra instruments, ask questions about instruments they may be interested in, and hear a demonstration by Minnesota Youth Symphonies musicians.

Sunday, January 25

Vulcan Fun Day @ Snow Park at the Fair
@ Minnesota State Fairgrounds
1265 Snelling Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55108

Hours: 11am – 3pm
Ages: Appropriate for all ages, likely you won’t want to put kids under 4 on the snow slide!
Details: Shoot down the snow slide ($1 per ticket), hunt for treasure, sip cocoa, vote for your favorite snow sculpture and take a firetruck ride with the Vulcans!

Classical Carnival: St. Paul Civic Symphony
@ Landmark Center
75 W 5th Street, Saint Paul, MN 55102

Hours: 3 – 4pm
Ages: Appropriate for all ages
Details: St. Paul Civic Symphony is playing “Hot & Cool Classics” in honor of the St. Paul Winter Carnival. Introduce your littles to selections from Tchaikovsky, Gershwin and Strauss – and don’t forget all the fun going down outside at Rice Park!
