Budget May

It doesn’t have to break the bank to entertain the family away from home in the Twin Cities! You’ll find seasonal and ongoing events and activities listed here that all cost $5 or less per person to attend.

5/4: Schubert Club KidsJam: Lau Hawaiian Collective @ Schubert Club Museum, St. Paul • 10:30-11:45am • $5/child advanced registration, $7/door • Details: During this hands-on workshop kids will listen to Hawaiian music, explore instruments, and craft a lei.

5/14: Brickmania Toyworks Open House, Brickmania Toyworks, Minneapolis • 10am-4pm • $5/pp or $10/group of 4, under age 4 FREE • Details: Intricate LEGO train layouts, hands-on LEGO activities and displays. This popular event is held the 2nd Saturday of each month. Read about a trip to the open house here.

tm brickmania (2)5/14: Family Dance @ Tapestry Folkdance Center, 3748 Minnehaha Ave, Minneapolis • 6:30-8pm • $5/pp or $10/family • Details: The focus is on teaching simple dances that everyone in the family can enjoy. Breaks will feature snacks and kid-friendly activities.

5/14-15: Shepherd’s Harvest Sheep & Wool Festival @ Washington County Fairgrounds, Stillwater • 9am-5pm Sat, 10am-4pm Sun • $5/pp ages 9+, under 9 FREE • Details: Events include Minnesota’s largest fleece competition, sheep shearing demos, animals in the barn, and more.

5/20: Family Fun & Fitness Fridays @ Great River Water Park, St. Paul • find Open Swim hours here • $2/pp during Open Swim hours.

5/20: Kids at the Castle: Muddy May @ American Swedish Institute, Minneapolis • 11am-noon (feel free to stay after and explore the castle) • $5/family • Details: Before the museum opens, join ASI for visual play, storytelling, music, and movement inspired by ASI’s exhibits that will encourage creative young minds. Suggested for ages 2-5.

5/1: May Day Hike @ Eastman Nature Center, Maple Grove • 1-3pm • $5/pp • Details: Decorate a basket to collect natural spring treasures along your hike. Reservations required at the link. ***FULL***

5/1: Nature Engineering: Flight @ Lowry Nature Center • 1-2:30pm • $5/pp • Details: Ages 5 & up can design, create and test flying contraptions.

5/3: My Preschooler & Me: Natural Wonders – Fantastic Flyers @ Cleary Lake Regional Park, Prior Lake • 10-11:30am • $5/pp

5/3-4: Nature Adventurers: Feathered Friends @ Wood Lake Nature Center, 10-11:30am • $8/adult-child pair, prepayment required by calling 612-861-9365.

5/9: My Preschooler & Me: Lowry Little Ones Spring – Kites & Flights @ Lowry Nature Center, 10-11:30am • $5/pp

5/9: Puppet Storytime: Birds In My Yard @ Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W Franklin Ave, St. Louis Park • 10-11am • $4/resident, $5/non-res • Details: The Westwood puppets tell a muddy story in their animated and comical style, then naturalist led activities will follow to highlight the story. Also presented 5/13/16, 10-11am.

5/11: My Preschooler & Me: Puppet Escapades – Animal Babies @ Eastman Nature Center, 10-11am • $4/pp

5/12: Big River, Small Fry: Nature for Curious Kids – Boats & the River @ Carl Kroening Interpretive Center, Minneapolis • 9am-12pm (drop-in) • $5/pp

5/12: My Preschooler & Me: Puppet Escapades – The 5 Senses @ Richardson Nature Center • 10-11am • $4/pp

5/17-18: Nature Adventurers: Magical Marsh @ Wood Lake Nature Center, 10-11:30am • $8/adult-child pair, prepayment required by calling 612-861-9365.

5/21: My Preschooler & Me: Nature Discoveries – The Pond @ Eastman Nature Center • 10-11:30am • $5/pp

5/22: My Preschooler & Me: Puppet Escapades – Let’s Go Fishing @ Lowry Nature Center, 10-11am • $4/pp


ONGOING MAY EVENTS & ACTIVITIES $5/PP OR LESS

Michaels Kids Club Crafts @ Twin Cities Michaels locations • Ongoing Saturdays in May, 10am-noon • $2 per project, ages 3+. Check the link for details.

tm gale woods farm 3Saturday Mornings on the Farm @ Gale Woods Farm, Minnetrista • Ongoing Saturdays in May, 9:30am-noon • $5/pp • Details: Calling all farmhands! Help out with chores, spend time with the animals and participate in other spring farm activities. Closed-toe shoes required.

FANtastic Saturdays @ The Blast Indoor Playground, Eagan Community Center, Eagan • 5-8pm • $4/pp ages 18 mon-12 years, all others free. Details: Better bang for your buck every Saturday evening: $4 will get you into the Blast Indoor Playground, the gym for games, and provide a movie and crafts (parents must stay to supervise their kids).

Anne's Family Attended A Family Fun & Fitness Friday at Great River Waterpark.$4 Sundays @ Great River Water Park, St. Paul • 11am-5pm • $4/pp • Details: Read about the kid-friendly amenities at Great River Water Park here.

“Big Bird & Elmo in One World, One Sky” @ Como Planetarium, 780 W Wheelock Pkwy, St. Paul • Ongoing Tuesdays in May, starting 5/3, 5:30-6:30pm • $5/pp, 2 & under on laps are free.

Raptor Center Tours @ Gabbert Raptor Center, St. Paul campus of the U of M • 30-minute tours every half hour, 10:30am-3:30pm, ongoing Tues-Fri • $3/ages 3-17, $5/adults • Details: Bring kids of any age for a fun and educational visit. Meet some resident raptors, get hands-on with natural materials, and visit the kids’ play corner.

Bowl for a Buck @ University of MN’s Coffman Union (Thurs, 5pm-close) & St. Paul Student Center (all day Wed) • $1 per game plus $2 shoe rental.

Friday Family Funday @ Grove Cove Aquatic Center, Maple Grove • Ongoing Fridays in May, 9am-8pm • $5/pp or $19/family for all members.
