Oh, it is summer, finally! I took Gianna’s advice on her 5-Step Summer Planning this year, and my family’s dance card is full from now until school starts. It’s amazing how much the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota have to offer. I would like to do everything on the Free List this weekend, but we have to be reasonable. We’re going to the Cat In The Hat on Friday night (see my review next week) and a school party on Saturday. If we get to Flint Hills on Sunday, we won’t leave time for errand running or (God forbid) housework. Not that I’m complaining. If you don’t have a plan for the weekend, below are five great options and there is plenty more on The Calendar.
Outdoor Movie: Pee Wee’s Big AdventureJohnstock, Between 28th and 29th on Johnson Street Northeast, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55418 Friday, May 30, 2014; Dusk
I really wish we could make it to this movie. I haven’t seen it in ages, but I’ve been thinking about introducing it to my kids since Art-A-Whirl when Well Trained Monkey played Tequila. Common Sense Media recommends this movie for ages 6 and up because of some potentially scary parts, but admits there are plenty of parts that younger kids would find hilarious.
This is really just the kick off to a great neighborhood celebration. On Saturday, they will have a free bounce house (at least they did last year) and a magic show and some inspiring local artists selling their craft. Last year there was a wonderful upcycled puppet maker and several other kid-friendly booths.
Saturday & SundayFlint Hills International Children’s Festival The Ordway and Surrounding Parks, 345 Washington Street, St. Paul, MN Saturday, May 31, 2014 and Sunday, June 1, 2014; 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Not everything at the Flint Hills International Children’s Festival is free, but there are enough free activities to keep a family busy for the entire day if you choose to go that long. Gianna has more details here. Parking can be either expensive or difficult — depending on your tolerance levels. You can download a free bus pass from Metro Transit here. In our family, bus rides always increase the fun and decrease the hassle.
Discover Aviation Days Anoka County Airport, 8891 Airport Rd NE, Blaine, MN 55449 Saturday, May 31, 2014 and Sunday June 1, 2014
Do you have little airplane lovers in your family? They may LOVE Discovery Aviation Days. Plus, I hear there are pancakes involved! That’s almost a good enough reason to go by itself.
SaturdayBedlam Lowertown Grand Opening Party Bedlam Lowertown, 213 East Fourth St., St. Paul, MN 55101 Saturday, May 31st, 12:00 p.m. – 2:00.a.m.
It seems like there are a lot of reasons to go to St. Paul this weekend, including Grand Old Day. Anne has the details on this and several other events in her St. Paul Round Up.
