Earl Bakken’s Birthday Bash / Free Second Saturday

The Bakken Museum, 3537 Zenith Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55416
Saturday, January 11, 2014; Noon – 4:00 p.m.

You can find my earlier article on the Earl Bakken Birthday Bash here.  Free Second Saturdays will be continuing through 2014.  Here is a list of all the 2014 themes.

Spanish Storytime

Red Balloon Bookshop, 891 Grand Ave., St. Paul, MN. 55105
Saturday, January 11, 2014; 10:30 a.m.

Every Monday the Red Balloon offers a Spanish Language Storytime presented by Little Sprout Learning Center.  This Saturday you can get a sneak peak.  This is aimed at toddlers, but anyone can come and sing songs, learn rhymes, and hear stories in Spanish.

Brickmania Toyworks Open House

Saturday, January 11, 2014; 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Brickmania LLC, 1620 Central Avenue NE, Suite 170, Minneapolis, MN 55413
Note:  The address is  “Central Avenue,” but it is actually a little off Central.  Use the map they offer.  Even having driven past it every day for a year and sometimes saying, “Hey there’s that Brickmania”; it took us a little time to find it following the address.

Brickmania Toyworks hosts an open house its NE Minneapolis Warehouse every second Saturday.   This is a popular event, but we did not find it crowded. Its a nice option for the younger kids for this reason.  There is room for them to play and you can see them from anywhere in the space. The open house features inspiring displays of Brickmania’s models plus LEGO train layouts of the TCLTC (Twin Cities Lego Train Club) and GMLTC (Greater Midwest Lego Train Club).  There is a stay and play area and small selection of snacks and refreshments available for purchase.  Of course there is a store, too.

From the Field: Bird Paintings by Jim Rataczak

January 11 – February 23, 2014
The Bell Museum of Natural History, 10 Church Street SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455
Free on Sundays; noon to 5:00 p.m.

This is opening weekend for From the Field: Bird Paintings by Jim Rataczak.  If you are in the mood for a quiet outing, I recommend The Bell.  Even on free Sundays, it seems quiet and contemplative.  Yet it is an awesome place to take kids.  There is a hands-on family room and the dioramas are amazing.  Below is a video by the Bell showing how kids are inspired to learn at the Bell.

Besides Family Fun Twin Cities, I spend my 9 to 5 at a day job pursuing my weird passion for calendars and organizing things as a legal secretary. When I get home I spend my time with my four kids, 10, 6, 4 and 1. My amazing husband is both a full-time musician and full-time stay-at-home dad. Together we run a small radio empire — SiaNet Radio — playing, promoting and enjoying the wide variety of local music and art in the Twin Cities. I juggle all this while writing about exploring the Twin Cities with kids. I couldn’t be happier.
