Twin Cities Free Family Events for November 7 – 8, 2015

Both the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts are hosting their free family days this weekend! If you’ve yet to bring the kids out to one of these events, I highly recommend it.  For more ideas of how to get out with your family this weekend, check our extensive Family Fun Calendar. Here’s some inspiration to get you started:

First Free Saturday: Flower Power
@ Walker Art Center

Time: 10am-3pm
Details: Activities are geared towards kids ages 6-12, but don’t let that stop you from bringing your littler ones! Free gallery admission for the whole family every first Saturday of the month.

Free Family Music Series: The Beat Goes On
@ MacPhail Center for Music

Time: Performances at 10 & 11am
Details: Open houses at MacPhail are a lot of fun and include concerts geared towards kids, a chance to play with instruments, snacks and more.

Nature Rocks! Outdoor Center Open House
@ Eden Prairie Outdoor Center

Time: 9am-noon
Details: Enjoy free family-friendly activities such as hiking, interactions with live animals, craft projects and more. The event is held the first Saturday of each month.

Details: Art-making, dance theater, storytelling, gallery hunts and more themed to regions of India. Family Day at the MIA is a free monthly event.

Sundays at Landmark: St. Martin’s Day
@ Landmark Center
75 West 5th St, Saint Paul

Time: 4pm
Details: This German celebration gives everyone the opportunity to participate in the spirit of generosity. Make lanterns and join St. Martin in a parade around Rice Park.

Let’s Get StARTED: Gobble, Gobble

The novelty of back-to-school has worn off, the excitement of Halloween parties have wrapped up, and it’s still weeks until Thanksgiving break. And so we’re left with…November. But take heart, there’s plenty of free and budget family entertainment going on this month; you just have to dig a little deeper to find it. Here are 12 ideas to get you started:

Get Out For Nature Play!

Nature Play Fall Frolic @ Wargo Nature Center

Cost: $3/pp plus tax
Details: Head outside and look for the ways nature is changing and preparing for winter. This program is designed for 2-5 year olds who are accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required.

Details: Join other families for outdoor adventures with a different theme each month! Search for clues that animals have left behind, enjoy hands-on activities and story times, and get up-close looks at treasures from our naturalist’s backpack. It’s a great way to get outside with your child and learn about the natural world and get inspired with ideas to take home.

Welcome to the weekend! We’d like to start you off with a few FREE options for family entertainment around town and remind you that our Family Fun Calendar has a complete listing of events for this weekend and beyond.

Saturday, January 17

Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival
@ Lake Harriet Bandshell
4135 West Lake Harriet Parkway, Minneapolis, MN 55419

Hours: 12 – 4pm
Ages: Appropriate for all ages.
Details: The 13th annual festival will feature a multitude of kites flying over Lake Harriet as well as experts demonstrating their flying skills and Tips Outdoors attempting to get you hooked on ice fishing. Bring your own kite or purchase one there.

Winter Open House: Snowshoes & Tracks
@ Maplewood Nature Center
2659 E 7th St, Maplewood, MN 55119

Hours: 10am – 3pm
Ages: All ages are welcome; snowshoes are rented to participants ages 4+.
Details:  Naturalists will be on  hand to answer questions, orient you to the nature center trails and, for a $5 rental fee, teach you how to strap on a pair of snowshoes. Sleds will be providing for pulling little ones and hot chocolate is free for all. Stay to explore the nature center’s indoor exhibits.

Childish Films Presents Adventures in Music
@ Minneapolis Central Library

Hours: Doors open at 10am for snacks and activities, pre-show performances begin about 10:30 and films begin closer to 11am.
Ages: All ages are welcome; films are best enjoyed by kids ages 3+.
Details: Explore music before the show with Katie Condon of MacPhail Center for Music. Three short animated films will follow.

Details: The Museum is completely free of charge each third Sunday of the month; check out Adventures with Clifford the Big Red Dog™, now in its final weeks. As the free Sundays are very popular, a set number of people will be admitted to the museum each hour on a first-come, first-served basis. Discounted ramp parking is available for $5/3 hours.

Let’s Get StARTed: Snowy, Snowy Snowman

Ages: Appropriate for all ages, art projects may be geared towards children of preschool age and up.

Details: The 11th year of Urban Expeditions at Landmark kicks off with a tour of Austria! Explore music, crafts, dance, food and more without leaving St. Paul.
