Things to do in Minneapolis-St Paul this weekend!
September 7-8, 2019 – Grandparents Day
September is that glorious month in Minnesota where it’s still possible to run around in shirtsleeves, enjoying the sunshine. We like to make every early fall day count – and prove it with weekends packed full of festivals, craft fairs, farm fun and other reasons to run around in the outdoors. Need some more inspiration? As always, you can check our September Family Guide or our Family Fun Calendar.
Sunday, September 8 is GRANDPARENTS DAY! What better gift to give than time well spent with them? We’ve got some ideas if you’re looking for an inter-generational family outing this weekend. Or, if this weekend’s not in the cards, we’ve collected several grandparent outing ideas that can be meaningful year-round.
Kids can get up close to fire trucks, watch demonstrations, a fire truck parade and catch fireworks. Plan ahead if you’ve got little ones who are crazy about big rigs: our complete Twin Cities Touch-a-Truck calendar includes 2 more dates in September (Oakdale & Woodbury).
$5 cruises on the Steamboat Minnehaha, a carnival, parade, and fireworks.
Sept 7: Minneapolis Monarch Festival | Lake Nokomis, 49th & Woodlawn
Art-making activities, guided nature walks, music and monarch exhibits. 10am-4pm.
Sept 7-8: Eagan Art Block | Eagan
Activities like coloring & hot cocoa, CAP Super Saturday, National Dot Day and movie screenings.
Sept 8: Johnny Appleseed Day | Bruentrup Heritage Farm, Maplewood
Old fashioned farm fun: haywagon rides, cider-making, old-fashioned cars, pedal tractors, a cornhusk craft, butter making and face painting.
TWIN CITIES APPLE ORCHARD PICKS
It’s all about apples here in the Twin Cities during the month of September. Local orchards are nearly all open for business, many with special apple festivals and events going on to tickle the taste buds. We’ve highlighted a few that would be fun to visit with the grandparents:
Grape Stomp Festival | Aamodt’s Apple Farm & St Croix Vineyards, Stillwater
Yes, we’re suggesting you take your kids to a vineyard. The very family-friendly annual Grape Stomp gets all ages involved, tots to grands. Stomps at 12, 2 &4 pm, free vineyard tours and live music. Plus, Aamodt’s Apple Farm next door is opening their fall activities this weekend: Honeycrisp Express train, wagon rides and goat farm. Try picking your own apples with grandma and grandpa. Have a FREE professional portrait taken; wonderful memories to be made.
Deardorff Orchards | Waconia
Take a tractor wagon ride out to pick-your-own apples and let the kids play freely in their own space with hay bales and farm animals. Pick-your-own apples begin Saturday, Sept 7. Open 10am-6pm.
