Starts Jan 24: St Paul Winter Carnival

Projected opening: Jan 11: Ice Castles | Excelsior
The real-life ice palaces will amaze with icy tunnels, slides, illuminated chambers, and often visiting royalty. Get your tickets online and save a bundle, even more if you can make it out on a weeknight. $6.95-$18/pp. Read our review of Ice Castles here.

Starts Jan 12: St Paul Chamber Orchestra’s Free Family Music
Target’s Free Family Music Series – starring the St Paul Chamber Orchestra – is a wonderful way to introduce kids to classical music. The 2019 series begins mid-January. Tickets to these events are always free, but required and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Three different musical experiences are offered: Xplorchestra!, Family Concerts, and Start the Music. Each family is allowed to reserve up to 4 tickets per concert – but hurry because these tickets go fast.
Starts Jan 13: Urban Expedition | Landmark Center, St Paul
Travel the globe at Landmark Center – without the jet lag! A new cultural experience each month, complete with family activities, entertainment and food, through April 14. Admission is FREE.
FAMILY EXHIBITS OPENING IN JANUARY
Starts Jan 19: Wild Kratts: Creature Power! | Minnesota Children’s Museum
A brand-new exhibit makes its debut alongside roomfuls of other interactive exhibits. FREE admission each third Sunday of the month (Jan 20) but come early and be prepared to wait in line.
TWIN CITIES PERFORMING ARTS OPENING IN JANUARY
Opens Jan 15: Mr Popper’s Penguins | Children’s Theatre Company, Minneapolis
It is hard enough for Mr. Popper, a modest painter, to support himself and his family, and the unexpected addition of twelve penguins makes it even tougher, 4+, tickets $15+.

Closes Jan 6: Our Global Kitchen | Bell Museum, UMN St Paul campus
Have you checked out the brand new Bell Museum yet? Our family was impressed to the point of purchasing a membership so we could make a quick return. The Kitchen exhibit has a little something for everyone – but only if you visit by the first week of January.
Closes Jan 13: Handmade Holidays | American Swedish Institute, Minneapolis
The Turnblad mansion is decked out in its holiday finest through Jan 13 – kids will also love the newest exhibit Tom’s Christmas Fish in the family gallery and scouting for Tomte throughout the house. $6-$12/pp.
Ends Jan 27: Skate the Star | Mall of America
The Mall’s outdoor ice rink is FREE to enjoy – bring your skates or rent a pair onsite ($5). The rink is located at the north entrance. Warm up with free hot cocoa Saturdays only, 12-2pm, on level 1 North.
