Anniversary of the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
At Home Family Fun:
Normally held at Split Rock Lighthouse, This year the Annual Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting will be held via social media platforms , starting at 4:30 p.m. with the beacon lighting following the ceremony at around 4:45 p.m. The video stream of the beacon lighting will be provided by KBJR TV in Duluth and can be accessed live through the MNHS and Split Rock Lighthouse Facebook pages. It will also be available as a recording on Facebook and YouTube.
- Road Trip? While the grounds of Split Rock Lighthouse will be closed, visitors interested in viewing the beacon in person may do so from the shoreline in Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. A state park permit is required.
- Or not? Since its a weekday, maybe you can go see the lighthouse at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis and watch boats on the Mississippi.
This book made my cry: The Edmund Fitzgerald: The Song of the Bell by Kathy-jo Wargin. I think this is a shelf-worthy book considering it is a part of Minnesota history.
Here is an interesting article about what crews eat on a Great Lakes Freighter. It looks like you can go with anything “meat and potato”, but I like the idea of fish for this meal.
Dinner Conversation Starter: Would you want to work aboard a ship? Why or why not?
Bonus November 10th Holiday:
Sesame Street Day – Pull out the videos from when Sesame Street was good! and read everyone’s favorite Sesame Street book – The Monster at the End of this Book by Jon Stone. For those of you (like me) who don’t do voices as well as you would like, let Grover read it.
