Museum Day 2020 – Cancelled

Museum Day

Smithsonian has cancelled Museum Day 2020. Learn more on the Smithsonian website

The 2020 Smithsonian Museum Day is moving from September to April 4, 2020.

Minnesota has always had several participating museum (not always the same museums). It will be interesting to see how many museums sign on for the first year of the event being held in April. We now have 12 Minnesota museums signed up to participate, but there may be more last-minute into March. We’ll keep checking and update as we go.

The big question. Is This Really A Good Deal?

In a lot of cases, no. Many of these museums are free or cheap year round and may require a road trip. In those cases, you may be happier visiting on a more convenient day. However, for other participants, Smithsonian’s Museum Day may be the only chance to see that museum for free. (Note that you only get two free tickets, you may still end up paying for some family members). We list participating Minnesota museums here, including the address, an approximate drive-time from the Twin Cities, and the prices you would pay any other day.

The obvious winners for a Twin Cities pick are the Twin Cities Model Railroad Museum and the Museum of Russian Art (both late entries). Grab your ticket fast if either of these are your choice.

My picks for the best road-trip deals of 2020 are Runestone Museum in Alexandria and Winona County Historical Society in Winona. Both are about 2 hours from the Twin Cities, so they do require a road trip, but a family will save on admission. And, in April we have pretty even odds that the roads will be clear and the weather will be nice.

Finally, If you don’t see the museum you want to visit on this list, check the Museum Day page linked above, because sometimes there are last-minute additions and sometimes museums even get removed from the list.

    1. I’m sorry. I updated last week and there list changed substantially during that time. I have updated again, and we should match now.
