Museum Day – September 18, 2021

Museum Day

The 2021 Smithsonian Museum Day is is September 18th. Minnesota has always had several participating museum (not always the same museums). This year there are only 4 Minnesota museums signed up to participate. This is a small fraction of the usual number, but there may be more last-minute participants.  It never hurts to check the Smithsonian Magazine website.

The big Question. Is Museum Day Really A Good Deal?

In a lot of cases, no. Many participating museums are free or cheap year round and may require a road trip. In those cases, you may be happier visiting on a more convenient day. However, for other participants, Smithsonian’s Museum Day may be the only chance to see that museum for free. (Note that in 2021 you only get ONE free ticket per email address, you may still end up paying for some family members*). We list participating Minnesota museums here, including the address, an approximate drive-time from the Twin Cities, and the prices you would pay any other day.

Best Twin Cities Deals:

All three participating Twin Cities museums would be a good deal to take advantage of this year. All three usually have an admission fee and all offer a look at a culture with a good sized Twin Cities population. Grab your ticket fast if either of these are your choice.

Best Road-Trip Deal

There is only one museum participating outside the Twin Cities this year – The Hillstrom Museum of Art in Saint Peter. It is FREE everyday.

Finally, If you don’t see the museum you want to visit on this list, check the Museum Day page linked above and below, because sometimes there are last-minute additions and sometimes museums even get removed from the list.

    1. I’m sorry. I updated last week and there list changed substantially during that time. I have updated again, and we should match now.
