Mother’s Day Weekend Free List

Only one of my picks this week is specifically geared towards mothers, but that is kind of okay with me.  At this point in my life the thing I want most of all is to be able to just hang out with my family in a stress free environment.  Anyone of these activities fit that description.  Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t turn down a date night or a spa day and if my husband offered to “let me catch up on laundry” while he took the kids out, I’d take him up on the offer.  However, its our family days I look forward to the most and the family days I’m going to remember.  Here are my picks for the week.

Hear ye, hear ye! Let it be known that we will be learning about the science behind medieval weaponry, building catapults and having a mock battle.

Mad Science Castle Under Siege

Community Program Room, White Bear Lake Library, 4698 Clark Avenue,White Bear Lake , MN 55110; 651-724-6007
Saturday, May 10, 2014; 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

This might not be every mother’s dream, but I think it sounds like a ton of fun.  Learn a little about the science behind medieval weaponry and then build a catapult of your own.  There is even a mock battle. This activity has a limit of 20 children and its on a first-come basis, so I would plan to get there early.   Appropriate for ages 4-11 with an adult.

Brickmania Fire TruckBrickmania Toyworks Open House

1620 Central Avenue NE, Suite 170
Minneapolis, MN 55413; 612-545-5263
Saturday, May 10, 2014; 10:00 a.m. to 4:oo p.m. Now EVERY weekend !

  • Saturdays 10AM-4PM
  • Sundays 12-4PM
  • First Thursday of every month 5-9PM

My husband tells all his single-dad friends that Family Fun Twin Cities is the secret to meeting hot moms.  To a certain extent that may be true, but your odds of them being married are kind of high.  However, this is the outing where the tables turn.  Brickmania Open House has a disproportionate number of dads to moms.  Again, I have no idea if they are single — but they could be. Either way this is one of my favorite laid-back family outings.  You can drop in any time and stay as long as you like and just hang out.  If you want to learn more, Gianna has written about her Brickmania experience here.

Bakken_Museum_LogoBakken Free Second Saturday

The Bakken Museum, 3537 Zenith Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55416; 612-926-3878
Saturday, May 10, 2014; 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Nothing makes me feel like more of a fraud than continually writing about something I’ve never done.  I have never been to the Bakken and that’s a shame, because they have been offering Free Second Saturdays for awhile now.  The Bakken is on my list and will remain there until I get tehre with my family.  This month, enjoy the theme Wind & Weather! with Axtman and PBS’s SciGirls.  There will also be an opportunity to make KidWind Kits and play with kites.

Bonsai Making StepsMother’s Day Bonsai Show

Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, 1225 Estabrook Drive, Saint Paul, MN 55103
Saturday May 10 and Sunday May 11, 2014; 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

You can read my somewhat short review of last year’s Bonsai Show HERE It’shard to express how much a enjoyed this day last year.  The Bonsai visit was pretty short since I’m the only person in my family who really cares, but we had a nice day all around.  The one thing that made it stressful was that we didn’t park and ride.  The shuttle runs continuously 9:30am – 6:30pm.  Even knowing that we will regret it, sometimes we do the whole hunt for a parking space routine.  The buses are wheelchair and stroller accessible, so there really is no good reason not to take advantage.

Finland ExhibitFamily Day at MIA — Finland: Designed Environments Exhibit

Minneapolis Institute of Arts, 2400 Third Avenue South, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55404

Family Day will be focusing on May Flowers, which is kind of a nice Mother’s Day Theme, but I am more excited about the new Finnish design exhibit.  The exhibit will cover several aspects of Finnish design, including architecture and urban design, sustainability, and new areas of design.  I love when something grown up I want to do comes together with something family friendly –like Family Day.  If you can’t make it this month, Finland will be at the MIA until August 17th, so maybe they’ll do a Family Day tie-in before that.

Besides Family Fun Twin Cities, I spend my 9 to 5 at a day job pursuing my weird passion for calendars and organizing things as a legal secretary. When I get home I spend my time with my four kids, 10, 6, 4 and 1. My amazing husband is both a full-time musician and full-time stay-at-home dad. Together we run a small radio empire — SiaNet Radio — playing, promoting and enjoying the wide variety of local music and art in the Twin Cities. I juggle all this while writing about exploring the Twin Cities with kids. I couldn’t be happier.
