The Moomins are moving in to the American Swedish Institute and you don’t want to miss this!
Tomte, the long-time resident of the American Swedish Institute’s Turblad Mansion, is taking off to Sweden for the summer to visit relatives, and Finland’s favorite friends, the Moomin are moving in!
Have you ever met Moomin? He’s as famous as Mickey Mouse in Europe, even has his own theme parks and cafes, and he’s making his very first trip to the United States— right to Minnesota! His real name is Moomintroll and he is interested in everything he sees as the world is full of things to investigate and exciting adventures. Moomin can be most often found in Moominvalley where he lives in Moominhouse – which is round and blue – along with great cast of family and friends. Explore the world of Moomin and his loveable cast of characters: Moominmama, Papamoomin, Moomin Maiden, Hermulen, Stinky and more in ASI’s Family Gallery. Investigate the natural world of Moominvalley and Minnesota, write letters to Moomin, and get to know Moomin’s creator, Tove Jansson, the Swedish-speaking Finnish writer and Hans Christian Andersen Medal winner whose books have sold in millions, and been translated into 44 languages.

When I spoke with Ingrid, the Youth and Family Services Coordinator, she said, “Well, Moomin was created by a swedespeakingfin.”
She may not have said it that fast, but I was not ready for those words together. “I’m sorry. You said a Swedish Fish?”
She laughed and repeated herself a little more slowly and once I put everything into context (I was, after all, at the American Swedish Institute), I understood.
Ingrid told me that the family gallery in the eaves and turrets of the Turnblad Mansion were transforming into Moomin’s World (with the 3rd floor gallery in the middle staying the same) and we would be able to visit Moomin’s round and blue house, and imaginative play would include Moomintroll.
I am very excited about Moomintroll. I know my kids will love him. While he is moving in on Saturday, there are two special days dedicated specifically to celebrating Moomin.
Enjoy crafts, games, storytelling and songs inspired by Moomin and his adventures. Included with museum admission.

In the hour before the museum opens, join ASI for visual play, storytelling, music, and movement inspired by the ASI’s Explore with Moomin exhibit that will encourage creative young minds and active hands. Recommended for ages 2–5. On August 15, we’ll help our new friend from Finland, Moomintroll, celebrate his birthday! $5 per family. Registration not required; check in at the Information Desk by 11 a.m. on the day of the program. Adult accompaniment required.
Moomin is planning on staying at ASI until November 2, but a little birdie–named Ingrid–mentioned that he may stay and celebrate Christmas with us. Maybe. Stop by and meet Moomin and if you like him, keep coming back!
