10 am to 5 pm,
Activities scheduled from 10 am to 3 pm.

Yes, you can hit Free First Saturday at the Walker any month.  For families who know their limits but try to do a little something every weekend, you may want to hit it up another month.  However, if you are a Walker die-hard or if the Art Fair Weekend is a special event for your family, I recommend planning in the Walker for around lunch time on Saturday.  The Sculpture Garden is a great place for a picnic.  I’ve never seen it too crowded to spread a blanket.  After your picnic, your inspired artists can create a masterpiece of their own.  (Hmmmm.. If you create little masterpieces everywhere you go, you may want to leave some room in your backpack for hauling home the treasures.)

This month The Walker’s theme is Grassroots to celebrate the exhibit, Fritz Haeg: At Home in the City. I love creating little monsters, so my favorite activity scheduled for this weekend is the Botanical Mash-Ups in the Sculpture Garden.  You and your little ones can join artist Jim Proctor to create bizarre and fantastical alien plants with materials found in your backyard (well not MY backyard, but maybe your backyard).

Also while you are there, try your hand at hand felting, whittling and natural dying and then watch the Momentum: New Dance Works series. Program notes are available here. After you have had a “rest” at the Walker, you can hit the art fair road refreshed again.

Besides Family Fun Twin Cities, I spend my 9 to 5 at a day job pursuing my weird passion for calendars and organizing things as a legal secretary. When I get home I spend my time with my four kids, 10, 6, 4 and 1. My amazing husband is both a full-time musician and full-time stay-at-home dad. Together we run a small radio empire — SiaNet Radio — playing, promoting and enjoying the wide variety of local music and art in the Twin Cities. I juggle all this while writing about exploring the Twin Cities with kids. I couldn’t be happier.
