Let’s Just Call It “Earth Month” – 12 Ways to Celebrate The Earth in April

This year St. Paul is celebrating its 30th year of hosting an Annual Citywide Spring Cleanup in honor of earth day.  Not to be outdone by her neighbor, Minneapolis has her fair share of Earth Day events.  Many of them are park clean-ups as well.  These events go throughout the month of April to help clean up the parks, to raise money for the parks, and to raise awareness of our planet.  Several other parks, Como Zoo and Midtown Global Market also offer Earth day celebrations.


 1.  Saint Paul’s Annual Citywide Spring Cleanup

Parks Around Saint Paul
Saturday April 12, 2014; 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Cost/Registration:  Free/Residents are encouraged to sign-up ahead of time.

With-the-brutal-winterFamilies and others are encouraged to join the St. Paul Parks department to clean up the city parks.  Supplies are provided and can be picked up at the five kickoff sites:

  • Como Lakeside Pavilion, 1360 N. Lexington Pkwy, St. Paul
  • Highland Pavilion, 1200 Montreal Av, St. Paul
  • Phalen Pavilion, 1600 Phalen Dr., St. Paul
  • Indian Mounds Shelter, 10 Mounds Blvd, St. Paul
  • Harriet Island – Kelley’s Landing Pavilion, 200 Dr. Justus Ohage Blvd, St. Paul

Following a brief program at each location, volunteers will be able to select a park, recreation center, or neighborhood of their choice to pick up trash.


2.  Minneapolis Recycle Run 5K, 10K, and Free Kids Run

 3.   Earth Day Clean-ups

Parks Around Minneapolis
Saturday, April 26, 2014; 9:30 am-noon
Cost/Registration: Free/No Preregistration Required

Pre-Registration not for you?  Then the Minneapolis Clean-Up are for you.  Just show up at any of the participating parks between 9:30 a.m.-noon, check in at the registration table, and you will be given gloves,bags and instructions.

If you can’t make the big Earth Day Clean-Up on April 26th, Luxton Park is doing their clean up a week early


5. Earth Day Clean Up Event At Dodge Nature Center

Tuesday, April 22, 2014; 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Start the evening with a picnic dinner before participating in clean up activities such as removing invasive species, trail maintenance, garden clean-up, litter pick-up and more.


6.  Party for the Planet

Como Park Zoo and Conservatory
Friday-Sunday, April 25-27, 2014; 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Cost/Registration: Free/No Registration

If a party is your thing, join Como Zoo and Xcel Energy for their Party for the Planet.  Throughout the zoo you will find activities, crafts and education programs.


 7.  Earth Day Birding Festival

Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center, 12805 St. Croix Trail S., Hastings, MN 55033
Saturday, April 19th 2014; 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Cost/Registration: $2.50/pp or $10/pp with lunch; Preregistration required 651-437-4359 

Celebrate spring’s arrival by learning more about birds with classes, demonstrations and guided bird trips.


 8.  Free Family Fun Day: Earth Event-Trash Survey

The popular weekly Free Family Fun Days at Richardson Nature Center will celebrate Earth Day with two events.


 9.  Midtown Earth Day Celebration — “The Way We Grow”

Cost/Registration: Free/No Registration
Celebrate the earth with Midtown Global Market and Do It Green! Minnesota with activities, displays and demonstrations, including a food choice display “food prints”; children programs; Eco Twister game; seed planting; wallet-sized food choices and shopping tips card; sustainable cooking demonstrations by the chefs at Kitchen in the Market  and more than 15 educational booths from local environmental organizations.

10. Franconia Earth Day Celebration

Franconia Sculpture Park, 29836 St Croix Trail, Shafer, MN 55074
Tuesday, April 22, 2014; 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Cost/Registration: $10 donation for the hearty meal, reservations required.  Call 651-257-6668 or email info@franconia.org to RSVP.

Spend earth day enjoying the outdoors at Franconia Sculpture Park.  At 7:00 p.m. have dinner with the resident artists.
