Landing on the Moon, 50 Year Celebration

On July 20, 2019 we will commemorate the “landing on the moon” 50th anniversary.  The Twin Cities is packed full of Moon Opportunities, starting in May to help us get ready for the historic celebration.  If you are looking for something unique to do with your kids, spouse, parents, or all of the above, we collected all the “Landing on the Moon Events” we could find.  Look for updated listings weekly.

May 17-August 4:  Apollo 11: First Steps Edition Nationwide Premiere | Omnitheatre, Science Museum of Minnesota | $9.95 for adults and $8.95 for kids ages 4 to 12 and seniors (FREE for members). Combination Omnitheater and exhibit gallery admission is also available.

May 17:  Walk When the Moon is Full: Frog Moon | Richardson Nature Center, Bloomington| 8-9:30 pm | $5 pp, children must be accompanied by an adult.  The frogs are out and will serenade your walk in the moonlight.

May 17:  Walk When the Moon is Full: Hares | Sochacki Park, Robbinsdale | 8-9:30 pm | FREE

May 18: Apollo Day | Science Museum of Minnesota | Noon-4 pm | Members: FREE, Non-members: $14.95-$19.95 | The museum will be full of hands-on activities including Stomp Rockets you can launch with air and Pocket Solar System drawings.

May 18: Full Moon Walk | William O’Brien State Park | 8-9 pm| Vehicle Permit necessary: $7–one day permit, $35–year permit | “Discover your connection to our planet’s only moon during this special program. The park naturalist will take you on a 1 mile evening stroll up Wedge Hill while the sunlight changes to moonlight.”  While this may not celebrate landing on the moon, it does help us to appreciate the moon.

May 21-June 9: Museum of the Moon | Bell Museum | Tuesdays-Sundays, 10 am-5 pm | $9-$12 | Some of the ‘Museum of the Moon’ special events happen after hours May 22, 29, and June 5. Favorite Family Event is the Super Moon Pajama Party on June 1 from 6-9 pm.

June “Landing on the Moon”

June 17: Art When the Moon is Full | Silverwood Park, St. Anthony | 7-8:30 pm | $6, for ages 6+ | Hike through the park in the moonlight and try your hand at wood-burning art

June 22: Universe in the Park | Lowry Nature Center  | Enjoy a short (20–30 min) public talk and slide show. Following the presentation, attendees can view the sky through multiple 8-inch reflecting telescopes. Universe in the Park is happening around Minnesota throughout the summer, click here for more information

July 20: Apollo Anniversary and Cosmic 5K | Bell Museum |5K: 8 am, Kids Space Dash: 9:15 am, museum open 10 am-5 pm | $15-$50 | “Bell hosts a fun-filled daylong celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo Moon landing, both commemorating the past and looking forward to a promising new era of inspiration, innovation, and discovery.”
