Things to do in Minneapolis-St Paul this weekend!

JANUARY 12-13, 2019

Woke up to a chill in your bones this morning? It’s official: winter is upon us in the Twin Cities. The task now is figuring out the best way to go about embracing it this weekend! For more inspiration, hop over to our Family Fun Events Calendar or our January Twin Cities Family Events Guide.

Sat, Jan 12: Winter Open House | Maplewood Nature Center
Have you taken the time to visit during the winter months? Come get a taste of the nature center during its annual winter open house. Try snowshoeing on the trails and warm up with cider. 1-4pm, $5/pp

Sun, Jan 13: Winter Ice Festival | Centennial Lakes Park, Edina
Horse-drawn wagon rides, face painting, ice sculpting demos and skating for families – rent skates or bring your own to skate free around the ponds and the canals that connect them. 1-5pm, FREE.

OUTDOOR PARKS PICK – Fort Snelling State Park

Fort Snelling State Park is the only Minnesota State Park located within the heart of the Twin Cities. It sits surprisingly quietly in the river bottoms below it’s namesake historic fort, a stone’s throw from the busy international airport, and shelters the confluence of two major rivers. During the wintertime, families can hike or cross-country ski on trails that link to Minnehaha Park and the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Warm up in the Thomas C. Savage Visitor Center with films and and interactive exhibits where families can learn about Minnesota history and natural resources.

Sat, Jan 12: Winter Trails Day
Explore winter activities such as ice-fishing, cross-country skiing, skijoring, quinzee building, and more. Naturalists will be on hand to help you make the most of the day. 11-4pm, admission included with a $7 park vehicle permit.

Sun, Jan 13: Family Day: Pompom Palooza | Minneapolis Institute of Art
On each second Sunday of the month, Target sponsors a Family Day at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Themes usually tie in with current exhibits and feature extra kid-friendly activities to help kids get excited about the art. In January, they can make their own fuzzy artwork. 11am-5pm, FREE.

Sun, Jan 13: Urban Expedition: Puerto Rico | Landmark Center, St Paul
Travel the globe without hopping a plane! A new cultural experience each month, complete with family activities, entertainment and food, through April 14. 1-3pm. While you’re exploring Landmark Center, stop in at the Gallery of Wood Art  with its kid-friendly “Touch This!” exhibit and the Schubert Club Museum to see the instrument “cyclone”. Admission to all of these events is the bargain price of FREE!
