So I’m curious to know if anyone out there has ever made a family outing out of searching for the St. Paul Winter Carnival Medallion? Here at Family Fun Twin Cities we focus a lot of our efforts on finding activities for the youngest members of the family, but we realize that folks are looking for ways to entertain their pre-tweens as well. Personally, my three young daughters (ages 2 – 6) wouldn’t have the patience or stamina to spend hours out in the elements, searching the great expanse of Ramsey County public parks. My 8-year-old son, however, might think a real, live treasure hunt would be really cool. If you’re game to win up to $10,000 in prize money for tracking down the medallion, here’s what to do first:

  •          Purchase an official St. Paul Winter Carnival button ($5) at participating retailers such as SuperAmerica, Cub Foods, or online at
  •          Register your button at the link here. Buttons must be registered to claim the maximum amount of prize money!
  •          Follow the clues released by the St. Paul Pioneer Press daily for hints on where to search. The clues can be found on the paper’s Treasure Hunt page. The first five clues have already been posted; one will follow each day until January 31 or until the medallion is found.
  •          Clip, copy or print from the website each clue in case you find the medallion. Again, these clues are required to be presented with the found medallion to claim the maximum amount of prize money.
  •          Grab your pre-tween (or whomever’s up for a treasure hunt!) and get searching.

For some inspiration, here’s a list of places the medallion has been found in the past (dating all the way back to the 1950s!). Remember, the little disc is usually hidden in some type of container and/or concealed by natural elements.
