Gorilla Forest Grand Opening
Thursday, June 6, 2013
9:45 a.m. FREE!
One more great reason to visit Como Zoo this summer – the gorillas have a brand new living space! The primates have always been a must-see for our family so it’s nice to know the habitat is getting the much-needed attention. A press release from Como describes the upgrades including a new 13,000 square foot outdoor space designed to give the gorillas plenty of room to play and exhibit their fascinating social dynamics to guests. We’ll be able to get closer to them than the original space (photo below) allowed.
Upgrades have been made to the gorillas’ indoor facilities as well. The space will be better lit and ventilated, and the trees and rockwork have been improved to give the family groups more room to spread out. I’m excited to see the refreshed environments after years of traveling through the dim building!
Como is celebrating the opening of Gorilla Forest with fanfare tomorrow, June 6, at 9:45 a.m. There will be short program and official ribbon cutting followed by a weekend of special events. African Drumming and recycled bead-making are a couple of the scheduled activities along with a scavenger hunt for gorilla trading cards throughout the new exhibit.
