With 12 children between them, the parents of the Family Fun Twin Cities team sure are THANKFUL for a good deal! This guide to free Twin Cities November family fun is filled with local ongoing events as well as special and seasonal ones (ready or not, the holidays are upon us). 11/3/17: Forever Wild Family Friday: Full Moon Fun | Lebanon Hills Regional Park Visitor Center, Eagan | 7-8:30pm | Drop in for smores and stories.

11/14/17: Ballet Tuesdays | Landmark Center, St. Paul | 12-1pm | Excerpts from the classics, perfect for budding ballerinas.

11/4/17: Home Depot Kids Workshop: Veterans Day Helicopter | TC Home Depot locations | 9am-noon | The first Saturday of each month kids get a kit to build, apron and pin while supplies last; adults must accompany children.

11/10/17: Friday Family Movie Night: Sing | Edinborough Park, Edina | 6:30pm

11/11/17: Nokomis Fall Urban Craft & Art Fair | Lake Nokomis Community Center, Minneapolis | 9:30am-4pm | Shop local handmade gifts and art; activities and crafts to entertain the kids.

11/12/17: Family Day: Art Zoo | Minneapolis Institute of Art | 11am-5pm | Activities are done in collaboration with Concordia Language Villages.

11/12/17: Traditions of Germany (St Martin’s Day) | Landmark Center, St Paul | 1-3

11/18/17: Target Free Family Concert: Start the Music! Brass Bop | Humboldt High School Auditorium, St Paul | Concerts at 10am, preshow activities 45 minutes prior | Geared toward children ages 3–6 and their families, but all ages are welcome. Arrive early for pre-concert crafts, activities and games, then enjoy a children’s story told in a 30-minute concert. Tickets go quickly! Also held 11/25/17 at 9:15 & 10:30am at Park Square Theater.

11/18/17: Wells Fargo WinterSkate Grand Opening | Landmark Center, St Paul | Performances begin at 6:30, open skate at 7:15pm | Live music, skating performances, photo opps and free skating.

11/19/17: Target Free 3rd Sunday | Minnesota Children’s Museum, St Paul | 9am-5pm | Explore the newly renovated and expanded museum free! Keep in mind that this program is very popular and you may wait in line to be admitted.


ONGOING NOVEMBER WEEKENDS – FREE

Minneapolis Institute of Arts | Minneapolis | Daily, 11am-5pm

Como Park Zoo & Conservatory | St Paul | Daily, 10am-6pm, suggested donation of $2/child & $3/adult, but all welcome whether or not you choose to donate. | Seasonal events include the Fall Flower Show in the Conservatory’s sunken garden, storytime at noon, and animal programs throughout the day.

Materials Lab | Minnesota Museum of American Art, St Paul | Open during exhibition hours, ongoing Sat/Sun in Nov, 10am-4pm | All ages can drop in and get creative with available materials and a little guidance. The Minnesota Museum of American Art is temporarily closed for construction of a brand new space set to open in 2018.

Nature Rocks! Open House | Eden Prairie Outdoor Center, Eden Prairie | Ongoing Saturdays in Nov, 9am-noon | Enjoy free family-friendly activities such as hiking, hands-on interaction with live animals, craft projects and more.

Parent/Tot Time & Preschool Open Gym | Apple Valley Community Center | Ongoing Mon/Wed/ Fri, 9:30-11am | Ages: 5 & under w/ caregiver | Burn off some energy with other kids, develop motor skills and coordination. A special tot time for tykes ages 2 & under is held from 9-9:30am followed by open play for 5 & under until 11.

MOA Toddler Tuesdays | Mall of America Rotunda | Ongoing Tuesdays, 10am – noon | Live entertainment and activities guaranteed to excite the stroller set. Upcoming event schedule here.

Free Tuesday Nights | Minnesota History Center, St Paul | Ongoing Tuesdays, 3-8pm

Wee Wednesdays | Midtown Global Market, Minneapolis | Ongoing Wednesdays, 10:30am – 1pm | In the past, MGM has offered dance troupes, cooking lessons, and live animals to entertain kids. Stay for lunch — there are many tasty ethnic vendors to choose from, and several offer specials on Wednesdays. Park in the adjacent Midtown Exchange Ramp up to 1.5 hrs. free with validation.

Games Galore | Union Depot, St Paul | Ongoing Wednesdays, 10am-8pm | Play giant-sized versions of classic games including chess, checkers, Connect Four, Dominoes and more.

Lil Explorer Thursdays | Como Park Zoo & Conservatory, St Paul | Ongoing Thursdays starting 9/7/17 through April 2018, 10am-noon | The hall between the Visitor Center and the Conservatory is filled with hands-on activities, manipulatives, art projects and games perfect for the 4 & under set. TWIN CITIES EARLY HOLIDAY EVENTS – FREE

11/4/17: Nature Arts & Crafts Fair | Richardson Nature Center, Bloomington | 10am-3pm | Local artisans of jewelry, felting, painting and more display their wares; afterward enjoy the park reserve. All vendor fees donated to the VEAP-Bloomington Food Shelf.

11/9/17: Santa’s Arrival Ceremony | Mall of America | The holiday season officially kicks off at Mall of America with Santa’s Arrival Ceremony. Santa will be greeted in holiday style with live performances.

11/18/17–12/17/17: Holiday Open House featuring Santa & Albert’s Arrival and Annual Holiday Play | Bachman’s, Minneapolis | Saturday open house from 9:30am-3pm welcomes Santa to kick off the holiday season. Live reindeer, treats and crafts for all, plus the annual play weekends thru 12/17/17.

11/18/17: Rice Park Tree Lighting Ceremony & WinterSkate | St Paul | Rice Park will dazzle with thousands of twinkling lights throughout the winter. Come downtown to see the holiday tree lit and be among the first of the season on the skating rink. There will be music, fireworks at 6:30 and skating begins at 7:15.

11/22/17: Winter Lighting Ceremony | Nicollet Commons Park | Nicollet Ave & 126th St, Burnsville | Making an appearance are local choirs, refreshments, Mr. and Mrs. Claus, 200,000+ lights, and a 30-foot-tall tree.

11/24/17: Holidazzle begins | Loring Park, Minneapolis | 5-10pm | Holidazzle has returned to Loring Park, offering free admission to all, and there will be vendors, activities, food, and fireworks galore. Holidazzle will run 5-9pm on Thurs, Fri until 10pm, Sat 11am-10pm & Sun 11am-7pm thru Dec 23, 2017.

11/24/17-11/26/17: Taylors Falls Lighting Festival | Grand Lighting & Santa Parade, Christmas at the Folsom House, storytime with Mrs. Claus, wagon rides, lighting displays and more.

11/24/17-11/26/17: Christmas in Excelsior | The annual 3-day Christkindlsmarkt is packed with a grand parade, children’s activities in KidsWorld, a North Pole Trolley, music, food and loads of other traditional activities.

11/24/17: Light Up the Lake Celebration | Wayzata | 4-7pm | Tree lighting ceremony, pictures with Santa, a candy cane hunt for the kids and a parade of lights.

11/25/17: Tree Lighting Ceremony | 50th & France, Edina | Holiday Market open 12-5pm followed by tree lighting at 5pm with carolers and Santa.

11/30/17: Holidays in the Heights Tree Lighting & Open Swim | Inver Grove Heights | Lighting at 6pm followed by free open swim at the renovated water park.

TWIN CITIES FAMILY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteering as a family can absolutely be FREE family fun – usually the only cost is time well-spent experiencing the reward of giving back. All ages can participate in Doing Good Together’s National Family Volunteer Day Service Fair at Midtown Global Market, Minneapolis, 5-7:30. Get to know different organizations and non-profits around the metro all in one place. Every project you work on stays put and is used by the groups who set up the projects.  Have fun making things for babies, for animals, for the homeless, etc.
