Mayday! Mayday! I’m going down under the weight of all these free weekend activities! I’ve got our top five picks listed below, but there are many more to choose from on our Family Fun Calendar, including Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday, a free kids fishing clinic, and a large serving of library and bookstore events!

Free Family Weekend Events for May 2 – 3, 2015

@ BeARTrageous

Time: 3 – 4:30pm
Ages: All ages welcome
Details: Come create a colorful May Day basket and enjoy activities and refreshments. Donations are appreciated!

Free Family Music Series: The Bazillions
@ MacPhail Center for Music
501 S. 2nd St., Minneapolis, MN 55401

Time: Full program runs 10am – noon with performances at 10 & 11.
Ages: Appropriate for all ages.
Details: The art and instrument exploration areas will be open at 10, 10:45, 11 and 11:45 a.m. between performances of local favorites The Bazillions. Free sample lessons are offered to kids before and after each concert, and snacks will be served. Click here for parking and directions.

@ St. Paul’s West Side, Cesar Chavez from Robert Street to Highway 52 (map here).

Time: 9am – 6pm
Ages: All ages welcome
Details: A full day of events and entertainment celebrating the vibrant and diverse District del Sol neighborhood in St. Paul’s West Side. For a complete schedule of events, click here.


We are MayDay!MayDay Festival with Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre
@ Powderhorn Park
3400 15th Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55407

Time: The 41st annual MayDay Parade kicks off at noon at the corner of 25th St. E. and Bloomington Ave. S in Minneapolis, travels south on Bloomington to 34th St. then heads west to Powderhorn Park. The Festival begins about 3pm and continues until dusk.
Ages: All ages
Details: You’ll want to click here for the complete entertainment schedule because 1) there’s far too much going on at Powderhorn that day to list here, and 2) I’ve never been able to attend this festival even though I’ve been scheming to for years. Please go and tell us all about it!

@ Beth El Synagogue parking lot
5225 Barry Street West, Saint Louis Park, MN 55416

Time: 11am – 2pm
Ages: Truck enthusiasts of all ages welcome
Details: It’s a petting zoo for truck fans! Get up close and hands-on with trucks and other vehicles of all sizes. There will also be live entertainment and food vendors.
