I’m ready to ditch Halloween and move onto other things. This is partly because Halloween was my last big hurdle before my baby is due. I’m sick of being pregnant and want to get to the end. But, if Halloween is YOUR holiday, check out some of Anne’s suggestion’s HERE. I posted the Minneapolis Park’s Halloween Schedule earlier this week. These are mainly Free Family Activities. Gianna has shared a list of grocery stores with Halloween freebies.
As always, our Calendars have an extensive list of outings — both free and not-so-free. Just a reminder, you can choose which calendars you see by clicking on the little blue down arrow at the top right corner of of the calendars. You can also click on the arrow next to the date to choose any date you want to view. We start populating the calendars as soon as we receive information. You can look as far ahead as you like. Obviously, the closer the date, the more we have added and the more accurate our information will be.
This is my Halloween-Free List of weekend outings.
Free Family Activities on Saturday:Free First Saturday – Celebrating the Spirits Walker Art Center, 1750 Hennepin Avenue, Minnapolis, MN Saturday, November 1, 2014; 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
I love the idea of celebrating Day of the Dead. It just seems important to celebrate the lives of the ones we love that have moved on. Walker Art Center has a variety of free family activities to explore this holiday and Mexican culture in general. The weather looks like it will be pretty pleasant for the first day of November. I’m thinking it will be a perfect day to wear hats and sweaters and explore the sculpture garden. No bees, no bugs, lots of art.
Free Ink Day – Día de los Muertos Highpoint Center for Printmaking, 912 West Lake Street, Minneapolis Saturday, November 1, 2014; 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Honestly, I almost forgot about this; but this is an activity I have been wanting to get to for years. Highpoint Center for Printmaking only offer three Free Ink days a year and this is one of them. Create your own relief blocks by hand and then get a chance to print with them. Highpoint artists will be on hand to teach you everything you need to know. Why not make this outing into a chance to create one-of-kind Christmas cards to print and send to your family and friends. Once you pick up this skill the uses could be endless.
Free Family Music Series with the Jack Brass Band MacPhail Center for Music, 501 S. 2nd St., Minneapolis, MN Saturday, November 1, 2014; 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Art and instrument explore area at 10, 10:45, 11 and 11:45 a.m.
My weekends seem really short lately. I’m getting a lot less done with the big belly and much of what I have to accomplish naturally spills to the weekend. If you feel the same way, than MacPhail has your family outing covered. It’s not an all day commitment — just an hour. You can pop in, learn a little about jazz music and be on your way to all your other weekend commitments. More details here.
Author Elizabeth Foy Larsen with Unbored Games Birchbark Books, 2115 W 21st St, Minneapolis Saturday, November 1, 2014; 2:00 p.m.
I worked really hard this summer to get my children un-addicted to television and excited about playing outside. At the beginning of the summer, I sometimes had to order them to go play outside. By the end of the summer, they would often be out past dusk. Now we’re heading into the cold and dark times and I don’t want to fall back into our old ways. This is where a book like Unbored Games would be really useful. Each page has an idea for another game to play. Wouldn’t it be great to conquer the winter boredom! If you head over to Birchbark Books, you can not only purchase this inexpensive little book, you can get it signed by the author.
Free Family Activities on Sunday:
Free Family Fun Day: Nature CollageKroening Interpretive Center, North Mississippi Regional Park, 4900 Mississippi Court, Minneapolis, MN 55430
Sunday, November 2, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Winter isn’t here yet. This is a great idea for getting outside this weekend. Explore North Mississippi Regional Park and stop inside the pretty Kroening Interpretive Center to make a nature collage. I think an outing like this requires thermos of hot apple cider! Yum.
