Family Fun Directory of Things To Do with Kids:
Northwest Como Recreation Center is a few blocks north of Como Park up Hamline Avenue. It has many amenities activities to offer families. Included in its offerings is a playground, sports fields and courts and an ice skating rink. It is part of the Chelsea Heights Elementary School building; the public is welcome any time to use the recreation center during open hours and the playground when it is not needed for students.
An interesting story behind the playground: it was remodeled in 2013 after the school's PTO led a 4-year effort to get funds, volunteers and sponsors behind new play equipment. HGTV, Lowes and Rebuilding Together Twin Cities were among the involved.
The result was a large climbing and sliding structure with an in-the-treetops theme. It's not a true nature playground, but it has some of the same elements.
New trees were planted when the playground underwent the remodel and will provide more shade in the years to come.
