The Guthrie Theater is the grown up theater in Minneapolis. We don’t recommend many of their shows because their age guidelines don’t really make the venue “family friendly” until kids are older. For the majority of Guthrie shows, they recommend children be at least age 12, but will admit children as young as 8. However, if you have started with the various children’s theaters around town, your kids may be ready to graduate to the Guthrie. A good place to start is with A Christmas Carol. For this show, the age recommendation drops to age 8 and they will admit kids as young as age 5. All children must have a ticket and children under 5 are never admitted. Most studio productions are not recommended nor discounted for children. Play Guides or Study Guides are often offered for theatergoers to enhance their experience with a deeper understanding of Guthrie productions. These guides provide commentaries about the playwright, the play’s cultural and historical context and its literary significance, as well as additional sources and questions for discussion. Play Guides for each season are posted as they are available. The Guthrie no longer offers its downloadable self-guided tour, but the public is still welcome to explore public spaces during open hours.
