Family Fun Directory of Things To Do with Kids:
Bryant Square Park and recreation center in Calhoun neighborhood of South Minneapolis encompasses a full block and offers family fun indoors and out.
Bryant Square Park Playground
The parks playground was renovated in the fall of 2016, with a grand opening in June of 2017. This playground has two areas. One area is developmentally appropriate for ages 2 to 5 with a sand base and the playground with the wood chips will be more challenging for ages 5 to 12. The two playgrounds are close together. This is good when you have children of varying ages and want to be able to see all. It is not so good when you have a fearless tot who wants to do everything her bigger brothers are doing.
Summer Meals for Kids at Bryant Square Park
Bryant Square Park participates in the summer meals program. In 2016, it offered children under age 18 a free snack from 2:30 p.m to 3:30 p.m. and free dinner from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Check back in June for 2017 hours.
Bryant Square Park Wading Pool
The pool is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm daily. Wading pools have no lifeguards on duty. The current pool is almost 50 years old. For this reason, updates are planned; however, budget restraints have pushed construction back to the fall of 2017. Extra features, including a shade structure and ornamental fencing, will be added courtesy of the Calhoun Area Residents Action Group.
In the winter months, Bryant Square maintains outdoor skating rinks for both hockey and skating. There is a warming room and some free loaner skates available.
Bryant Square Park Recreation Center
The outside of the recreation center is adorned with five mosaic panels created by nearly 200 neighbors of different ages and backgrounds through artist-led workshops. The panels theme are spring/summer, winter, autumn, water, and butterfly garden.
