Christmas Shopping Local: Toys

Christmas stockings and gifts

Christmas is a magical time of year, and the joy of Christmas shopping should reflect that. I know I’m not alone in the stress of shopping for our kids, but this year….this year, we are going to do it right. And by do it right, I’m saying we are going to get it done with the least amount of stress possible. Because I know you may be like me, we have collected this list of locally made toys and toy shops to support during this season. Get it done early and get it done quickly.  That will leave you plenty of time for Memory-Making Magic this season.

In 2020, if we want to shop local, stores are recommending that we shop early, most of them have made recommendations for a smooth shopping experience. We’ve included those suggestions below.

Christmas Shopping Local: Toymakers

Yoxo

We have a special fondness for YOXO since both of our businesses started up around the same time in the Twin Cities. Lately, we have noticed that it’s not easy to find YOXO toys. They are, however, available on Amazon, and you can click on our link to get them there.

Christmas Shopping Local: Toy Shops

We find these toy shops especially delightful.  Trains for the train lovers, crafts for the artistic, eco-friendly for the environmentally-conscience and hip for the hipsters.  Go and enjoy yourselves at any of these stores.

What we think!

In 2020, Mischief is asking that you consider alternative shopping plans:

  • Shop early! They’re stocking up early and rolled out Holiday wrapping paper in August.
  • Order a custom curated Holiday Gift Packages! Just tell them a little about the recipient and they’ll pick the perfect gifts. Choose curbside pickup, free delivery in Saint Paul, or ship wherever you want.
  • Just call in your order for curbside pickup! No need to even enter the store.
  • They’re open for shopping in person, too, but have a limited capacity this year.

Kiddywampus

What We Think!

Stop by either store in 2020, and ask for a Holiday Wish List or Letter to Santa. Staff will create a little registry with your child’s selected items for friends and family to shop from for the holidays. Like other local stores, Kiddywampus recommends we get an early start on shopping this year.  Want to shop from home?  Check out the digital catalog here.

Christmas Shopping Local: Bookshops

In our opinion, you can never go wrong with books as a gift.  My daughter received 4 books for her birthday and couldn’t be happier.  And while they may clutter your house, we feel they are a no-clutter gift.  Fostering the love of reading is worth the clutter some books make.

What we think!

In 2020, The Red Balloon offers free delivery to several neighboring zip codes (for purchases over $20) and porch pick up. Red Balloon is also suggesting alternative shopping ideas:

  • Buy early. Publishers won’t be able to reprint and restock books as quickly as usual this year, so if you have your eye on a particular book, make sure to grab a copy right away!
  • Make reservations. Red Balloon can only allow six people in the store at a time (if you’ve shopped there you understand). Book a reservation to guarantee your shopping time.
  • Consider gift cards.
  • Check out their gift packs. Red Balloon will select books and goodies so you don’t have to, and get them to you wrapped and ready to go!

Wild Rumpus

In 2020, Wild Rumpus plans to remain online only at least through the fall. They offer no-contact curbside pickup from 1-3PM daily on Tuesdays to 1-5PM.
