Twin Cities Birthday Parties for Kids: At Home Celebrations

After celebrating two at-home birthday kids and helping various friends’ celebrate their kids’ special days as well, I have decided that an at-home birthday party can really be spectacular.

The celebrations themselves were fairly simple with cake and gifts and a dinner meal of their choice. It was what we had to give. We learned about some of these other celebratory ideas after our birthday kids had already celebrated their at-home birthday. If you want to celebrate at home but not skimp on fun, we have ideas for a happy birthday:

Fun Ideas for A Birthday Sleepover

Sometimes the best birthday parties are the simplest. A slumber party with a family room full of kids and their pillows and sleeping bags is practically a right of passage.

Movie Marathon

Turn your family room into a theater with popcorn, Twizzlers and Junior Mints and their favorite pop.

Pizza Party

Let the kids make the pizzas as they like before eating them. We like to purchase pizza kits from Ready Meats in NE Minneapolis (3550 Johnson St NE, Minneapolis, MN 55418). Kits come with a parbaked crust, sauce, cheese and meat. From there we add whatever toppings we like best.  You could also do this with the Homemade White Whole Wheat Pizza Dough that Shelagh of SheCooks.Design shared with us.

Nailed It! Party – Cookie Making and Design

Anne shared a recipe she likes for Easy Sugar Cookies, but you could use any recipe you like and let the kids decorate, then vote on their favorites.

Backyard Campout

If your child is lucky enough to have a birthday in the warmer months, backyard campouts can be fun, complete with a tent, fire pit, sparklers and ice cream. Invite parents and siblings of your guests to a picnic before the kids camp out.

Game Night

Whether you choose old fashioned party games, board games or prefer to let the kids play vide games, they’ll have a great time hanging out together.

Birthday Celebrations when Social Distancing is Necessary

Let’s home that extreme social distancing is a thing of the past. But if not, kids can still have a special day. In our case, it brought our neighborhood together, but not too closely, and we felt so much love from friends who went out of their way to show love.

  • Some neighborhood kids have had birthday parades where friends and family drove by and honked and waived.
  • My kids received calls and messages and some special surprises that were more meaningful because of the situation we were in the middle of.
  • Video messages, Instagram love and Facebook posts are sometimes enough to remind kids they are special.
  • A scavenger hunt with clues to find their gifts would be fun!
