After celebrating two at-home birthday kids during the pandemic of 2020–quite possibly a third–and helping various friends’ celebrate their kids’ special days as well, I have decided that an at-home birthday party can really be spectacular.
In our case, it brought our neighborhood together, but not too closely, and we felt so much love from friends who went out of their way to show love. The kids received calls and messages and some special surprises that were more meaningful because of the situation we were in the middle of.
The celebrations themselves were fairly simple with cake and gifts and a dinner meal of their choice. It was what we had to give. We learned about these other celebratory ideas after our birthday kids had already celebrated their at-home birthday.
And we were offered a virtual LEGO party with Snapology for my youngest son’s special day.
Aaron Hagebak, the founder of Snapology Minneapolis, saw a need in the community as the quarantine was upon us and jumped into action.
He took what he knew– that lots of kids
- had a need to see their friends when they were forced to be at home.
- have lots of LEGO or at least a ziplock-sized bag of the bricks available to them.
- have access to a computer or smart phone.
He took that knowledge and put together a birthday program that works. If the kids can’t come to Snapology, Snapology can go to the kids.
He set up the program to be a simple hour long program. The kids who are invited to the party register online so that they can receive a link to the Zoom Meeting Room. When the party begins, they bring their LEGO stash to their workspace with a computer and click on.
A teacher greets them and they get started on a project. With some imagination and guidance, the kids “play” together over the screen. At the end of the party, the guests sing to the birthday star and everyone has a great time.
ARTrageous knows how to throw a birthday party, and though they usually do it in the studio, they have boxed up their fun and made it available to you at home. For the price of $40, your birthday star will receive supplies and instructions for five birthday-inspired art projects.
While 50% of the ARTrageous fun is the staff, they have boxed up all their energy for you to experience a surprisingly enjoyable at-home birthday. After you are done with your projects, I know the staff would be thrilled for you to send photos of your creations. They will enjoy seeing your projects that you followed the directions to create and most especially your projects that you created out of your own imagination!
Another way to have a satisfying at-home birthday is by making something routine a part of the day. Two people creatively decorating cupcakes together can be a super fun party. Turn on some groovy music, order some supplies from Lynn’s Cake and Candy Supply, and you have a birthday party to remember for the ages.
And by ordering supplies, I mean get everything you need from Lynn’s except the cupcakes (though you can get some boxed cake mix there if you need to). Their frosting and filling selection is so yummy. And they have the piping bags, tips, and instructions you need as well as sprinkles galore and other fun cupcake decorations.
Currently, they are open Tuesday-Friday 10 am-2 pm for call in orders. If you don’t know what to get, call and ask for any that would go into a cupcake decorating kit. If you know what you would like, you can order online.
They also offer local delivery throughout the Twin Cities for a fee. You may want to ask them for details about that.
