It was birthday celebration time.  Kyla had purchased Josefina with all the money she had saved for a very long time.  She didn’t get a gift from mom and dad this birthday because she chose to do an activity.  Since it was all planned that she was purchasing her doll, we decided that the best activity would be to celebrate with dinner at American Girl Bistro.

Was it a bit pricey?
Yes, it was.

Was it a special occassion?
Yes, it was.

I made reservations and after Kyla and Josefina were united, we explored the mall until it was time for dinner.  We arrived at 4:00 and were seated right by the window.  Outside Jimmy Neutron’s brain swirler ride (or something like that) spun and twirled causing me to be grateful that it was behind me.  Every time I watched it, I felt a bit nauseated.  The interior of the Bistro was beautiful, calming, and especially girly.

Dining at American Girl Bistro is a girl’s dream come true.  Every meal comes with two courses– An appetizer and a main dish–at a set price.  Brunch is $14 while lunch and dinner are $15.  They also offer afternoon tea time and craft at $11 from 2:00-4:30 on the weekdays.  Drinks and desserts are extra and gratuity is not included.  Appetizers include items for the adult palate and the girl’s palate.  From pretzel bites to fresh salad, from fruit kabobs with yogurt dip to artichoke and spinach dip.

The main dishes were very filling.  The girls chose “perfect picnic time” with a mini-burger, a mini hot dog, and fruit.  I chose the penne pasta with chicken, broccoli, and sun-dried tomatoes.  I must say that I liked my pasta, but it wasn’t what I expected.  The taste was good, but I was expecting a creamier sauce.

And for dessert we ordered a Root Beer Float for Tori and a Celebration Shake for the birthday girl, Kyla.  The Celebration shake tastes like birthday cake, has whipped cream piled high to the ceiling, sprinkles, and a birthday candle.  It especially appropriate for every single birthday girl who was there.  I don’t think there was a single person who was there not celebrating anything.

The waitress invited the hostess to come sing happy birthday with her.  And yet, who carried the song?
Mom!  It’s too my advantage that I’m a loud singer.
Both desserts were delicious and both girls finished every single last drop.  (We had to go to the bathroom a lot before we left the mall–good thing their bathrooms are awesome!)

While the food is good (maybe not worth it’s price, but good anyhow), the reason you go to American Girl Bistro is for the amenities.

Like special chairs for your dolls to join you.  And plates and cups for your doll to eat from (do not take these home.  How do I know?  I asked.  You can purchase them in the store if you want to)  They give you stickers and your doll stickers.  A box of questions to inspire conversation at your table.  They take the name of the person celebrating their birthday and the server greets them personally and treats them like a queen.

You can have birthday parties at the Bistro.  They offer the Bistro Birthday Celebration and the Deluxe Birthday Celebration.  Each one includes a meal, a goody bag to take home, and super yummy-looking cake.  The Deluxe Birthday Celebration includes a craft, doll tiaras, and a special gift for the birthday girl.  They say much more, but really, how much more can you include?

Highlights:

  • They take their dolls seriously and even if you don’t have an American Girl, you are welcome to bring your doll.  Tori did and they included her just like any American Girl.
  • The serving staff was extra sweet.  They understand girls and how to treat them like princesses.
  • The variety of food was great.  Not too many choices, but enough.  And a good selection between kid-friendly and grown-up choices.

Disadvantages:

  • It is very girly.  It’s supposed to be.  So if you have to bring a boy in, make sure there is good reason to…like he HAS to celebrate his sister’s  birthday and this is where she picked to go.
  • The price was high.  For 3 of us, I paid $70.  That’s over $20 per plate.  Being that it was a special occasion, I was okay spending it, but I wouldn’t do it on a regular basis.
  • It’s located in Bloomington, so if you live in the North Metro, it’s not very close.  But once again, if it’s for a special occasion, it’s okay.
