Kicking off with some neighborhood fetes and culminating with summer’s fair-well bash, August is ripe with family festivities:

8/3: Lake Hiawatha Neighborhood Festival, Lake Hiawatha Park, Minneapolis • 5-8pm • Family highlights: Free canoe rides, family fitness challenge, and prizes. The wading pool will have an inflatable slide! FREE admission.

8/5-7: Uptown Art Fair, Minneapolis • Family highlights: Stop by the Family Imagination Station hosted by Northern Clay Center. FREE.

8/7-15: New Brighton Stockyard DaysFamily highlights: Family activities in Long Lake Regional Park and a kiddie parade and movie in Veterans Park (8/10, 6:30pm). FREE.

8/12-14: Irish Fair of Minnesota, Harriet Island Regional Park, St. Paul • Family highlights: The Children’s Area of the Fair allows kids to explore Irish instruments, take an Irish dance lesson, and craft  in the Art Tent. FREE.

8/12-14: Twin Cities Polish FestivalFamily highlights: Musical and dance entertainment, traditional foods, Polish fun! FREE.

8/12-14: Rockford River DaysFamily highlights: Fireworks (8/13) & Grand Parade (8/14, noon). FREE.

8/14, Pioneer Day @ Pioneer Memorial Park, Newport • 11am-7pm • Family highlights: Parade (11am), live music, inflatables and a balloon artist. FREE.

8/18-21: Vadnais Heights Heritage Days • Family highlights: Movie in the Park (8/19), children’s games (8/20), watermelon-eating contest, and grande parade (8/21). FREE.

8/19-20: Maple Plain DaysFamily highlights: Ice cream social & Movie in the Park (8/19), Maple Plain Historic Museum Open House (8/20, 10am-2pm). FREE.

8/19-21: North Hudson Pepper Fest • $2-$3/button for events • Family highlights: Grand Parade (8/20, 11am).

8/19-21: Blue Heron Days, Lino Lakes • Family highlights: Movie in the Park (8/19), Parade on Lake Drive (8/20), and tour of Waldoch Farm Garden (8/21). FREE.

8/19-21: Heritage Days Festival, St. Paul Park • Family highlights: Grande Day Parade (8/20), Kids Zone filled with games  (8/21) and a petting zoo. FREE.

8/20: IndiaFest, State Capitol grounds, St. Paul • 11am-9pm • Family highlights: Face painting, henna tattoos, magic show & reptile show. FREE.

8/20: Mounds View Festival in the Park @ City Hall Park • Family highlights: Parade, fireworks. FREE.

8/20-10/2: Minnesota Renaissance Festival, Open weekends 9am-7pm • $12.50-$23.95 • Shakopee • Family highlights: Explore the Fairy Wing Forest and Mermaid Cove, take in a maypole dance, craft a wand or pirate hat, learn to juggle and much more.

8/21: Japanese Lantern Lighting Festival, Como Park Conservatory, St. Paul • $3-5/pp, under 3 FREE • Family highlights: Traditional music, dance, taiko drumming, and lantern lighting at dusk.

8/25-9/5: Minnesota State Fair, Falcon Heights • $8-$13/pp, under 5 FREE

8/26-28: Woodbury DaysFamily highlights: Buttons required for many events ($5/pp or $15/4-pack – children’s coin hunts, workshops and art activities), petting zoo, magic shows and Grande Parade (8/28).
