Archived: Valentines Day Weekend – Wish List

Since this is Valentines weekend, I’m going to toss a couple date nights into the Wish List.  A strong marriage makes a happy family.  As much as we love our kids, sometimes we want to be out with the loves of our lives, without loud gross short people our adorable offspring.

Annabel LeeVictorian Poetry Slam

James J. Hill House, 240 Summit Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55102
Friday, February 14, 2014; 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
$12 adults, $10 seniors and college students, $8 children ages 6 to 17; $2 discount for MNHS members
Reservations Recommended: Online or call 651-297-2555

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with 19th century poetry performed by actors in the drawing room of the Hill House. You and your date(s) will hear works by Dickinson, Poe, Longfellow, Browning. If you would like, you can bring your favorite short Victorian poem to read aloud.  Because we all have one of those, right?  After the program, there will be light refreshments and tours of the Hill House. You could bring your kids to this if you want; they have a children’s price. With the right well-behaved child or two, it could be pretty fun and romantic.  However, it would also make a fun child-free date night.

Art When The Moon Is FullArt When the Moon is Full: Owl Moon

Silverwood Park, 2500 County Rd. E, St. Anthony, MN 55421
Saturday, February 15, 2014; 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
$8.00 Per Person

Enjoy a beautiful full moon during a naturalist-led kicksledding excursion.  Luckily things look like they’ll be warming up for the weekend.  After the winter we’ve had the night might seem almost balmy.  Afterwards, make some owl-inspried art together then roast marshmallows while you listen for owls.  This is another outing that you could be attended with our without the kids.  It’s early enough for a Saturday night and the program is designed for ates 6+, but it could make a very romantic date night, tooJust because of the art project and marshmallow roasting, I would have a hard time leaving the kids at home.

The Mitten Cover The Mitten

Stages Theatre; Hopkins Center for Performing Arts, 1111 Mainstreet, Hopkins, MN 55343
Friday, February 14, 2014; 7:00pm
Saturday, February 15, 2014; 1:00 PM
Sunday, February 16, 2014; 2:00pm
Tickets: $15.00

This is the last weekend to catch The Mitten at Stages Theatre.  I’m interested to see what a “ballet-inspired stage version” would entail. There is still time to grab the book from the library if you want to read it beforehand.  One of the nice things about Stages is that the actors line up to greet the audience after the performance.  If you bring your copy of The Mitten or your playbill, you can get all the actors to sign it.   We had a lot of fun with that.

cartooonimage1Cartoon! — (Date Night?)

In The Heart of the Beast Puppet Theatre, 1500 East Lake Street, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55407
Thursday, January 23, 2014 – Sunday January 26, 213; 7:00 pm
Tickets: $12
This production intrigues me.  I would really like to see how they pull off the cartoon in a live action puppet show.  I’m trying to decide if this would be better for a family night out or a date night.  Although the show is based on the golden age of cartoons, I lean toward recommending this as a date night.  Starting at 7:00 p.m., this would be a late night for kids.  Breakdowns tend to happen between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m. in my house, and I’d rather not be out when they happen.   If your kids are used to later nights and old-school cartoons — complete with a chainsaw chase scene and an anvil drop – this could be a fun family night too, but I’m recommending it as a date night.  Image Credit: In The Heart of the Beast Puppet Theatre.
