SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31

Free Ink Day: Dia de los Muertos
@ Highpoint Center for Printmaking

Time: 12-4pm
Details: All ages are welcome
to take part in this free Highpoint tradition. Learn how to carve relief blocks by hand and make prints to take home, this month’s theme celebrating Dia de los Muertos. Young children will enjoy the activity, but will need close participation from adults.

Time: 10 & 11:30am
Details: Heart of the Beast will take center stage in the first floor atrium with their first show at 10:00am. Afterwards, children will have the opportunity to “create and take” a puppet. The second show will begin at 11:30 am. Come in costume and go trick-or-treating at Calhoun Square after the show!

BareBones Halloween Outdoor Puppet Extravaganza
@ Hidden Falls Regional Park

Time: 7-8pm
Details: Since 1993, BareBones Productions has presented The Annual Halloween Outdoor Puppet Extravaganza, a community-created spectacle pageant of larger-than-life puppetry, drama, stilting, dance, fire, song, and music that honors the circle of life by celebrating its seasonal arc of death in the Fall.

Trick-or-Treating at Twin Cities Shopping Malls: Tons of not-so-spooky FREE events going on at Twin Cities-area shopping centers on Halloween! A handful include Rosedale Mall’s Spooktacular, Mall of America’s Howl-o-Ween, and Halloween on the Mall at Eden Prairie Center. For a complete list, click the above link.

Trick-or-Treating at Twin Cities Grocery Stores & Markets: Activities going on the day of Halloween include Boo Blast at Lunds/Byerly’s Wayzata and the Fall Festival at the Plymouth location (both 11am-3pm), and Halloween activities at the St. Paul Farmers Market.

Details: Unplug with your child in nature. Enjoy crafts, games, puzzles, coloring, nature artifacts, bird watching, and live animals. Go on a hike before or after the program.

When: July 8 & July 22 (Wednesdays)
Cost: $5/pp, ages 4 & under admitted free
Details: Travel back to the turn of the 20th century at this historic farmstead. Kids can get as hands-on as they’d like — participating in farm chores such as feeding animals, picking crops, and hauling wood. Inside the farmhouse, work in the kitchen or assist in spinning wool. I tell you, the week absolutely flies by when it’s my turn to come up with the weekend activity lists. That part of the job is not actually so pleasant (really, I don’t need things to move any faster around here), but what I do enjoy is getting inspired to spend family time at some really cool places around town. And since I’ve got a little time on my hands this weekend, here’s what I came up with to choose from — and share with you all as well:

Perhaps you’ve got some princess attire left over from Halloween? Pull it back out and hit this special Cinderella storytime at Red Balloon courtesy the Children’s Theatre Company. And watch for a special Cinderella ticket giveaway coming soon from Family Fun Twin Cities.

First Free Saturday: What’s Happening!
Walker Art Center

Joy’s got the scoop on the special offerings at the Walker this Saturday. Activities specially designed for kids ages 6-12 have been inspired by the current exhibit Claes Oldenburg: The Sixties.

Nokomis Urban Craft Fair

Joy’s also got a great suggestion for a place to start shopping for those Christmas presents if you’re interested in buying from local vendors. The Lake Nokomis Community Center will host 30 craft vendors this Saturday to get you inspired for the holidays.

4 times per year, Highpoint Center invites the public to drop in, hand-carve and print with relief blocks, and take the creations home. This season’s Free Ink Day will honor the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos.
