Fall Family Fun List: Weekend of October 4-5

Bundle up and head outside for these classic fall family events, heavy on the apples and autumn colors. All of these activities come with a fee attached, but we tried to pick ones that we thought were reasonable for families. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4

Fall on the Farm
Where: Eidem Homestead, 4345 101st Ave N., Brooklyn Park, MN , 55444
When: 12 – 3pm
Cost: $6/adults, $4/kids 4-12
Ages: Appropriate for all ages
Details: It’s harvest time on the historic Eidem Homestead! Join in for harvesting activities, cider pressing and pumpkin carving.

Apples Galore
Where: Dodge Nature Center, Farm Entrance at 1701 Charlton Street, West St. Paul, MN
When: 1 – 2:30pm
Cost: $7/pp or $20/family (non-member), $5/pp or $15/family (member)
Ages: Designed for all ages
Details: Hike to the apple orchard for tastings and press them for fresh juice. Educational for all ages. Pre-registration is required.

SATURDAY & SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4 – 5

Apfelfest!
Where: The Landing – Minnesota River Heritage Park, 2187 Highway 101 East
Shakopee, MN 55379
When: October 4 – 5 • 10am – 5pm
Cost: $5/adults, $3/ages 2 – 17, 65+
Ages: Appropriate for all ages
Details: Learn how German immigrants harvested and processed apples, play games and ride a horse-drawn trolley.

Weekend Family Fun: Fantastic Foliage
Where: Minnesota Landscape Arboretum‘s Learning Center
When: October 4 – 5 • 12 – 4pm
Cost: $13/ages 13+
Ages: Appropriate for all ages
Details: Learn about leaves and why they turn those gorgeous colors in fall, participate in leafy crafts and complete a scavenger hunt. Take time to explore the Arboretum grounds and, kids, spend some time in the Green Play Yard.

Fall Color Tram Tour
Where: Eastman Nature Center at Elm Creek Park Reserve, 12400 James Deane Pkwy, Maple Grove, MN 55369
When: October 4 – 5 • Tours run on the hour from 1 – 5pm.
Cost: $5/pp, 20% discount for groups of 4+
Ages: Best for kids who can tolerate a decent ride.
Details: Registration required (763.559.6700 only). Enjoy the fall foliage from the comfort of a tram. Take in an apple cidering demonstration Sunday only from 1 – 4pm.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 5

Wood Lake Sunday Special: Apple Cidering
Where: Wood Lake Nature Center, 6710 Lakeshore Dr, Richfield, MN
When: 1 – 4pm
Cost: $3/pp
Ages: Appropriate for all ages
Details: Mill and press apples into cider.

Homeschool: Farm Discovery – Apples, Apples

Join the Gale Woods farmers for farming fun. Learn how the farmers care for the animals and gardens throughout the year. Each month we will care for the animals and cook with farm produce in the education center. This is an adult/child class; maximum of three children per adult. Free play activities are available after the program. Reservations are required for adult and child by the Monday prior to the event; call 763.559.6700.  Restricted to participants age 1 to 6.

Apple Cider Demonstration

Make apple cider the old-fashioned way. Squeeze apples with a wooden press. Taste the fresh cider as you learn about cidering history and apple varieties. Drop in anytime.  Free.

My Preschooler & Me: Puppet Escapades – Apple Harvest

Explore themed activity stations with your child, then watch a silly puppet show as Jesse and Bobbi plant an apple tree and discover what animals come to visit. After the show, go for a self-led fall hike, or enjoy your own picnic lunch. Reservations are required. Ages: 2-5.

Applefest!

Discover the story of apples in Minnesota. Hear how the first pioneers established winter-hardy apples and turned them into a major horticultural crop. Apples will be cooked, dried, canned, jellied and cidered during the day’s activities. Nineteenth-century apple recipes will be provided for your enjoyment. Observe and visit with artisans demonstrating their skills, and see how lives in early Minnesota were sustained by the tools of the trade. Play games and enjoy a ride on a trolley pulled by Percheron draft horses. The gift shop will be open and food will be available for purchase.

Fees are required, the options are: $5 (adults); $3 (children & seniors). Children under 2 are free.

Drop off your kids and investigate fall changes in Hyland Lake Park Reserve. We will end the day by making a craft and having a snack brought from home. Reservations are required. The morning session will be taught in English with an introduction to the Spanish language. The afternoon session is English only.

Garden to Kitchen: Apples ‘n More

Make applesauce like your grandmother used to make then take home some seed recipes to wrap up the growing season in your garden.

We’ll use local, organically-grown food from the garden down the road so you can hone your chopping skills, expand you pallet, and use your imagination to transform garden fresh produce into healthful home-made snacks and meals this growing season.

Participants between the ages of 6 and 17 must be accompanied by at least one adult. Maximum of 2 kids per adult. $30 for 1 adult/1child +10 for a second child.  Free parking at the Wirth Beach parking lot then cross the street and head to pavilion up the hill.
