11 a.m. – 2 p.m.  FREE!

A few fun facts you might not know about the University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center:

(1) Drop by this rehabilitation facility on the U of M’s St. Paul campus Tuesdays through Fridays (10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) for free (donations encouraged) public tours on the half hour (small admission fee added in 2015). The kids and I were lucky enough to pop in for the last tour of the day and had the place to ourselves, complete with a personal tour guide who tailored the visit to the attention span of my children. They loved the opportunity to get up close to the resident raptors (birds of prey) and ask as many questions as they wanted.

(2) More than 700 birds from bald eagles to peregrine falcons are treated each year at the facility. Veterinarians and vet students are trained onsite in avian medicine and surgery. Learn more about their work and what you can do to protect raptor habitats at The Raptors of Minnesota program presented Saturdays and Sundays at 1 and 2 p.m. (cost is $5 per student, $7.50 per adult).

(3) Once rehab is complete, the raptors are released back into the wild at one of two annual Raptor Release events. Held at Hyland Lake Park Reserve, this free program is filled with close encounters, teaching moments and the chance to bid the birds farewell as they head to the horizon (hopefully never to return!) It’s all going down (or up, I should say) this Saturday, May 4 at Hyland Lake Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

If you can’t make it this weekend, your next chance to catch the release will be in September.

  • […] Raptor Release Hyland Lake Park Reserve Saturday, May 4, 2013 11:00 am-2:00 pm The University of Minnesota and Three River’s Park partner to bring you this event.  But really, it’s not just to bring the even to you.  It’s also to actually release the birds of prey into the wild.  After being at the Raptor Center recovering from injuries and such, these birds have been deemed ready to to be released.  Can I just say that I’m really glad that I don’t have to take care of the birds or release them.  This day would be so emotional.  Successful and thrilling, but yet I think I would worry about “my birds.”  (What does this say about me letting my kids go?)  But even though I may be tearing up, this is a joyous day and a fun day to celebrate with your kids.  Activities begin at 11:00 am, and the release program is at 1:00 pm on the main stage.  Meet these birds up close (but not too close) and personal.  If your kids need a break from all the excitement, the “Chutes and Ladders” playground will be open and there will be concessions available for purchase.  Anne tells us all about it!
