Grand Old Day
Grand Avenue, St. Paul
Sunday, June 2, 2013
8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Many St. Paul families make a tradition of kicking off summer with the annual Grand Old Day festival. We are not one of those families. Nothing against the local event, I’m just starting up my reserve fund – of cash, energy, and calories for street vendor food – for the truly grandest of Minnesota summer festivals, the Minnesota State Fair. On the occasional year we attend Grand Old Day, we stick to the zones on Grand Avenue set aside for family activities.

Here’s the lineup for the Whole Foods Market Family Fun Stage, located between Grand and Wheeler and Grand and Saratoga streets:

11:30a.m.The Bazillions

12:30p.m.The Choo Choo Bob Show Live!

1:15 p.m.Spirit Tae Kwon Do Demonstration

1:30p.m.The Bazillions

2:30p.m.Radio Disney

3:15 p.m.Spirit Tae Kwon Do Demonstration

3:30p.m.Dakota Grand Squares

The Kids Adventure Zone, located on the grounds of Ramsey Junior High on Grand Ave between Cambridge and Wheeler, is certainly filled with activities to tempt the kiddos, but be prepared to open your wallet for the pony rides, water wars, bounce house and other diversions. Instead, I’d recommend the Grand Old Day Parade, especially because this year’s theme is “Through the Decades” and will celebrate all four decades that Grand Old Day has been a part of.  Floats highlighting the 1970’s, 1980’s, 1990’s and 2000’s should be nostalgic fun. The parade begins at 9:30 a.m.
