Family Portraits Began With Family

I began my photography career way back in high school, over 20 years ago.  I was trained-in on film back in the day of dark rooms and fixer.  I still say there is no better smell then the solution that is used to developed photographs.
My very first photography client was my mother.  She was the first person I photographed as person who had a story to tell.  There was an art exhibit that I wanted to enter and had to tell the story of a woman who overcame many obstacles in her life, someone who had a story to tell.  Even though she was my mother, she was the first person to expose me to the power of a visual story.
After the portrait was complete, it was very satisfying and powerful to watch her face “read” the story of her photos.  This was the first time that I saw my voice as a photographer was able to help tell someone’s story.
This is what I have set out to do.  Whether is it the story of client’s new baby, or the story of a family celebrating another year together.  This was my calling, and it very soon after developed into my passion.

Family Portraits in Session

I love to shoot in my studio.  It is a great studio that is set up specifically for families and babies/children.  There are tons of props, outfits and backdrops. When not shooting in the studio, my absolute favorite location is Minnehaha Park/Falls.

The most challenging part of being a portrait photographer is trying to have enough time in the day to do everything that needs to get done.  However, I am sure every mom knows what I am talking about. Most people are surprised to hear that it is NOT photographing babies and children.  I love working with kids!
The most rewarding experience is watching moms and dads see their photos for the first time.  So many times with family and children sessions things can get a little crazy.  I can see in mom’s face that she is worried there are no good photos, I always reassure mom and dad that these are going to be great, I promise.  Then, the day comes, when they see their photos.  And the smiles – those smiles – that is all worth it!
