children's festivalOne of my absolute favorite activities to do with my kids in June is the Flint Hills International Children’s Festival.  This year the city of St. Paul is hopping with kids and culture during the week of May 31 as they celebrate their 16th year!

During the week, school kids come to St. Paul to watch performances from around the world, appreciate in the Art Walk, and participate in global art workshops.

My favorite part of the International Children’s Festival is the free Family Weekend.  This year, mark your calendars for June 4-5, 2016.

Squonk’s Opera Pneumatica–Main Outdoor Attraction

The International Children’s Festival Family Weekend is full of FREE Outdoor Fun as well as low cost indoor performances.

The indoor performances cost $5/ticket and are scheduled throughout the weekend.  They include

These shows take place in the Ordway and inside the Landmark Center.

The outdoor fun takes place in Rice Park, in Wells Fargo Family Plaza and around Downton (for the Art Walk).

Make the International Children’s Festival a Smashing Success for your Family

First, let’s talk about what I’m pretty sure you already know.

  1. Bring a backpack with water and  healthy, hearty snacks.  More than likely there will be food to purchase via food trucks, but you will have to wait in line. There is so much to do, you won’t want to take the time to stand in line.
  2. Bring some cash.  While most everything is free, you won’t find free parking anywhere convienent.
  3. Wear comfortable shoes.

Here are Gianna’s 5 Family Festival Tips

  1. Go early.  Not because you will beat the crowd.  Nope, that’s not it at all.  Go early to beat the rain that is sure to come in the afternoon and shut down the cool outdoor performances.  (Let’s just say this has happened more than once to me)
  2. Bring an umbrella.  See Tip #1
  3. When your child wants to do something, say yes right away especially if it’s a balloon animal/creation.
  4. Eat when the kids want to eat. When you are out of food and they are hungry, leave.
  5. Take your time.  There is a lot to see and it’s super fun, but don’t feel like you need to do it all.

This is how to travel in style!
