While running a marathon as a family is probably not something many of us will attempt, cheering on the Minneapolis Marathon Runners could be a fun family outing this weekend.  There is a $10.00 charge to watch at the starting line, but the marathon coordinators have suggested a few locations they feel are best for viewing:

  • Lake Street Bridge at West River Parkway/Road: Get a bird’s-eye view of the race from the bridge overlooking West River Parkway. This location is very easy to access by car. You will be able to watch as runners go past Miles 9 and 23.
  • Half Marathon turnaround: This location is along West River Parkway just south of East 32nd Street. There is plenty of onstreet parking in the neighborhood this is just after Mile 9 and just before Mile 23.
  • Minnehaha Falls: This is an easy location to reach via Hiawatha Avenue/Highway 55. You will have an opportunity to see your marathoner go by twice in this location: at approximately Mile 11.5 and Mile 20.5.
  • Fort Snelling State Park: This is a location specific to Marathoners. Spectators should know there will have to pay $5.00 to get a visitor pass and access the park. Marathoners are in Fort Snelling State Park from approximately Mile 14 to Mile 18.

You can print a map of the race route to help you navigate. Afterwards, there is a post-race party with live entertainment at Bohemian Flats Park!  The park is located right at the Minneapolis Marathon, Relay and Half Marathon finish line!

Together we run a small radio empire — SiaNet Radio — playing, promoting and enjoying the wide variety of local music and art in the Twin Cities. I juggle all this while writing about exploring the Twin Cities with kids. I couldn’t be happier.
