‘Sam’s Son’ — A New Play in Town

Loosely based on the Biblical story of Samson, the book, music, and lyrics of Sam’s Son were written by our very own Jeremiah and Vanessa Gamble the founders of Bucket Brigade. The music was arranged by  Michael Pearce Donley (Triple Espresso, anyone?), and the whole she-bang was directed by Sean Byrd.

FFTC Family Guide to MEA Weekend

No School MEA Weekend

MEA Weekend is on the horizon, so if you like to plan ahead Family Fun Twin Cities has compiled a list for you to use as a starting point for this fabulous, fall four-day weekend.  If you plan more spur of the moment like me, these options will be on our October Family Events & Activities Guide for quick access.

 1) Be a farmer for the day

Harvest Days | Oliver Kelley Farm, Elk River
Oct 19-22, 10am-5pm, $6-$12/pp
I took my kids to Harvest Days on a blustery MEA day.  It was wonderful. We had a great time working with the bulls and visiting the house.  We made cornhusk dolls, explored the property and played with kittens.  Then, on the way out, we went Christmas shopping through their visitor’s center.  It was a blast! Expect even more to enjoy at the farm this year with their expanded visitor center. Read More

Introducing My Kids to The Sound of Music

Sound of Music

“Mom, What’s the Sound of Music?”

“Like the musical?”

“Yeah, no one in my class knew what it was, and Mr. G told us to ask our parents.”

This was the conversation that led me to the realization that I had never introduced my kids to the Sound of Music. Musical theater is just something we share in our household. I love Broadway and its often kid-friendly. But I’d forgotten the Sound of Music! It’s not like I shared it when they were too young and they had just forgotten it.  I never thought of it when I was making lists of family friendly musicals! Read More

‘The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe’ at Open Window Theatre is Breathtakingly Beautiful and Intensely Enchanting

Cheapskate

My date

When FFTC was invited to preview The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe at Open Window Theatre, I jumped at the chance.  I was extremely curious to see how a small black box theatre was going to pull off a large-scale production. My date was my almost 9 year old daughter (for a birthday outing) who  was also concerned about how they would give a man an animal’s body but keep his head and torso and yet still give him horns.

When we arrived early for the preview’s special reception of milk and cookies, we discussed this particular concern with our friend Joy Donley, the director of the production.

She smiled and said, “Well, you’ll have to see if you liked how we did it.  I think you will be pleased.”

She was right; we were not disappointed.

“She’s just trying to get the ruby slippers.  They are all she has left of her sister. Her sister was killed!”

My daughter and I had the opportunity to see the Wizard of Oz on opening night at the Children’s Theatre. I’d recommend this musical for kids who like and can sit through the movie or have experience with sitting still for longer periods.
