Winter Capsule Wardrobe Project 2015

Thrift StoreIt’s that time again: Switching our capsules.
To be honest, the boys didn’t need many new items, a couple more sweatshirts (replacing t-shirts) and St. Paulanother pair of warm athletic pants. They were done.

The girls and mom on the other hand?  We had a few more holes to fill in.  FFTC partnered with Arc’s Value Village to bring you a real-life look at thrift shopping for your capsule wardrobe.  In doing this, Arc’s Value Village provided us a 20% discount for our purchases.  No other compensation was exchanged, and boy, do I have things to share with you!

This is going to be fun.

Flash Giveaway Monday — Set of 4 Keychains from Totally Kids Furniture and Toys in Bloomington

flash giveaway MondayI grew up in Minnesota– all over.  I was born in Moorhead, moved to Fergus Falls area, lived on the North Shore, and lived in western Minnesota.  Now, as you know, I am a part of the masses that make up the Twin Cities.

I love Minnesota.  I have a Minnesota pride that is hard to beat, and I am passing that along to my kids.  Although with a dad from and two sets of grandparents currently live in Wisconsin, they have a strong affinity for the neighbor to our East.

And honestly, I am okay with that.

Despite that fact, some of my best memories come from my growing up years in Morris, Minnesota.   Read More

Flash Giveaway Monday – ‘Rhoda’s Rock Hunt’ by Local Author Molly Beth Griffin

flash giveaway mondayIf you’ve been reading FFTC for any length of time (even just a couple of weeks), you probably have figured out that we love good children’s literature.  And I’m not talking about Little Golden Books (although they have their place–in our house we have a place for approximately 200 Little Golden Books, but that story is for another time).  We love classics.  We new releases.  We love bookshops.  We love libraries.

We love authors. Read More

Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid Jr.’ at Stages Theatre – Past Production

This production of The Little Mermaid Jr. is past; however, you can find current and upcoming productions at Stages Theatre in our directory and family fun calendar.

Disney's 'The Little Mermaid Jr.' at Stages Theatre

Beautiful Ariel*

Stages Theatre Company always makes me happy, but rarely does it take my breath away. The Little Mermaid, Junior did just that. With Dash on my lap, we gaped at the scenery and all the oceanlife included in the show.

It’s a professional show done mostly by young actors and my kids loved it.  Some characters were slightly less believable than others, but it didn’t matter.  The whole story is a fairytale.  It’s all about magic and fun!  We enjoyed every minute of it.  Me and my kids ranging in age from 5-10.

It’s a great story for both boys and girls!  (just ask my reluctant 7 year old son who didn’t want it to end)

Flash Giveaway Monday — ‘Puppa-Na-Wuppana’

flash giveaway away

My kids want a puppy. Unfortunately for them, Daddy is allergic and would rather not deal with the repercussions of having a dog. So instead we have a loud, screechy parrot. I would love to have a dog, but then I read books like Puppa-na-Wuppana and think, I’m not ready to have a dog.

Make a Family Day of It at Q. Cumbers Restaurant and Centennial Lakes Park – plus a GIVEAWAY!

Q. Cumbers is celebrating 25 years with a concert and fundraiser for bullying prevention. Family Fun Twin Cities has the details.

* The giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to our winner Rachel Y.! Thanks for reading!*

It sounds like a feat of epic proportions: get married and open a restaurant business in the same year? Yet that’s exactly what Sheila and Mickey McCabe did exactly 25 years ago when they opened the doors to their successful buffet-style restaurant, Q. Cumbers in Edina. On this, their silver anniversary spring, I was invited to lunch with the owners, to get a behind-the-scenes look at the ultra-fresh way they prepare their food, and to learn about the Kat Perkins concert Q. Cumbers is putting on June 12 to benefit PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center.

And, of course, because Family Fun Twin Cities is dedicated to finding places — in this case, a dining option — that are kid-friendly, I was interested in hearing more about how Q. Cumbers appeals to families.

Q. Cumbers is celebrating 25 years with a concert and fundraiser for bullying prevention. Family Fun Twin Cities has the details.

Fresh, healthy choices – Kids, Sheila McCabe noted, like having a little control in choosing their own food. And they really can’t go wrong with the bounty of fresh (like, chopped up fresh daily in the kitchen!) veggies, salad ingredients and fruits. The buffet makes all of its soups from scratch, bakes all of its breads, and rotates through a menu of hot items that will always have picky-eater favorites on hand. Gluten-free options are plentiful and clearly marked for those with sensitivities. And for those of you with a sweet tooth like mine, don’t worry, there’s soft-serve ice cream with a fantastic top-your-own bar.

Kid-sized prices and more– A bigger-than-average-sized family like mine can sure appreciate this! Depending on the type of meal – lunch, dinner or brunch – children are charged 70¢-80¢ per year plus tax. Kids under 3 years always eat free. Also, save further on Monday nights after 4pm when kids ages 3-12 eat for only 99¢. (Limit two kids per paying adult. My family is covered!) Other kid-pleasing touches include coloring sheets, a good stock of storybooks, and balloons.

Nearby family attractions – Here’s where the “Make a Family Day” part comes in. Q. Cumbers is located only steps from the 24-acre Centennial Lakes Park in Edina. There is tons to do in the urban green space during the fair-weather months: paddleboat rentals, fishing, a challenging putting course and other lawn games, walking paths, a lakeside maze and live entertainment at the outdoor amphitheater. Get a look at the complete summer event schedule here. Families could easily purchase takeout containers from Q. Cumbers (you can find pricing here) and enjoy a meal picnic-style in the park.

Centennial Lakes Park

Now, about that giveaway. We’ve got a pair of tickets earmarked for one of our readers so they can enjoy a night out to benefit PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center. Q. Cumbers is hosting a 25th Anniversary Party & Fundraiser at the Centennial Lakes Amphitheater featuring Kat Perkins from The Voice! It’s a pretty good deal, too – tickets include general admission seating to the concert, a picnic dinner, and a meet-and-greet with Kat Perkins. If you’re interested in attending the concert and helping raise funds to fight bullying, tickets ($30/GA, $50/reserved seating) can be reserved here.
