Bookhounds Review – One North Star

One North Star is a delightful book that pleasantly exceeded my expectations. The illustrations by Beckie Prange and Betsy Bowen are beautiful and engaging; and Phyllis Root manages to pack a great deal of information into lyrical prose.

One North Star

I first sat down to read the book with my math-loving preschooler, assuming he would enjoy any counting book. However, within a couple pages, my first-grader was wedged in by us, playing along as we read. By the end, I had three of them engaged (ages 4-11).

This is the kind of book that can be read repeatedly but with a different focus each time. It can be read as:

BookHounds Invites: Belinda Jensen

FamilyLit

I would be lying if I didn’t admit that I was a little star-struck when I first met Belinda Jensen.  But she admits herself that she is a science nerd–and has always been one.

As a meterologist, Belinda gets to meet with second-graders and has learned first hand about their anxiety over the weather.  This is where being a mom herself collides with being a science nerd.

The Mayo Clinic has done research about how to help kids.  Bel took that information from Mayo and applied it.  She could do something to help kids.

That’s how Bel the Weather Girl  was born.

FFTC BookHounds Invites Illustrator Nina Crittenden

From what I have experienced, a picture book illustrator is a fun person. Especially those from Minnesota.

I guess I could be biased, but I don’t think so.  At the beginning of August, we met Mike Wohnoutka and today we meet Nina Crittenden.

“I’ve always been a huge fan of series.  It turns somebody into having a reading habit, going back to the same characters.”

-Erin Soderberg Downing

Erin Soderberg Downing is a fun mom!  You will hear about how she is a mother to three.  Sometimes four and sometimes five.  And how that alone was the inspiration for her popular book series, The Quirks and Puppy Pirates.

We have affiliate links to the books mentioned in the show notes below.

BookHounds Invites Stephanie Watson

Stephanie Watson is a native Minnesotan who grew up immersing herself in stories:  reading, watching TV, acting in Children’s Theatre Company shows and spending lots of time at the library.  She is a local author who teaches writing classes and does picture book critique work as well.

Most importantly, she is happy to be a soul parent.  (Trust me, it’s most definitely soul and not sole–her heart and humor is two sizes too big)

She and her 5 year old daughter (who shares my birthday!) live in Minneapolis.

We are pumped to have Stephanie on BookHounds this month as she is a dynamic mama with a really cool job.  She talks about what it’s like to be an author and how they foster reading in their home.

For more information, see the Show Notes below.
