Top 10 Fireworks Displays in the Twin Cities and More 4th of July Fun

Over the Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis

Celebrating Independence Day with Minneapolis’s Red, White and Boom over the Stone Arch Bridge.

Fireworks on the 4th of July are a tradition for our country.  You can stay at home and watch them on your TV (which we have done when our kids were super tiny) or you can find live fireworks near you.  Most of them start just after dusk–approximately 10:00 p.m.  More than likely, you will want to arrive before then to find a good spot to sit.

Here are our top 10 Fireworks Displays to enjoy this Saturday, plus some other fun to enjoy. Read More

Flash Giveaway Monday — ‘Puppa-Na-Wuppana’

My kids want a puppy. Unfortunately for them, Daddy is allergic and would rather not deal with the repercussions of having a dog. So instead we have a loud, screechy parrot. I would love to have a dog, but then I read books like Puppa-na-Wuppana and think, I’m not ready to have a dog.

Kids Cooking Classes with Wee Ones Wellness & Toylend USA

Confession: I’m super uninspired when it comes to cooking. Basically, I prepare the same 15 meals over and over in rotation for dinner, I swap out 5 different sandwiches when packing the kids’ lunches, and the young ones eat cereal for breakfast every. single. morning. There aren’t many complaints about food in our house, but there’s not a whole lot of creativity and introductions to new dishes either. This is partly why I jumped at the chance – really, responded within seconds – when Twin Cities Kids Club‘s lovely Lisa offered a chance to take a Wee Ones Wellness Healthy Hands Cooking Class with my preschooler. Daily Life on the Farm:
Family Fun: Daily Life on the Farm, Eidem Homestead

This is the season, I resolved – the first time I’ve had all four kids home during a summer break – that we’re going to muster our intrepid spirits and strike out to places around the Twin Cities that have been on our master to-do list for years. The historic Eidem Homestead, a turn-of-the-century farm out in Brooklyn Center, was one of these such places. This summer’s program at the homestead is “Daily Life On the Farm”, and it’s a fun chance for kids to get hands-on in the barn, the farmhouse, and in the field.

Some of the kids’ favorites: feeding the farm animals (the goats, at left), polishing the silver inside the house, picking peas in the garden, and pumping water for the potato plants. Excuse me, but how come there’s not nearly as much enthusiasm for tackling chores at home?

Family Fun: Daily Life on the Farm, Eidem Homestead

Another marked difference between our home of today and a farm of the past is how few possessions the children had to play with. But then, one of the costumed guides noted, kids back then didn’t have a whole lot of free time to play; they had a lot of work to do to help run the farm.

If you think your kids might also be interested in playing at farm chores, Daily Life on the Farm runs select Wednesdays in 2015 (check the schedule here before heading out) from 10-noon and costs $5/pp, kids 4 & under admitted free. ALL ages are admitted free on select Tuesdays when Eidem Homestead hosts Storytime on the porch (10:15 & 11am) followed by free play until noon.

Family Fun: Free Ink Day at Highpoint Center for Printmaking

A couple things I would do differently the next time I attend Free Ink Day (hosted four times annually) at Highpoint Center for Printmaking:

1) Have the kids arrive chock full of inspiration! Or, at least with an idea or two. A sketch couldn’t hurt, either. The central activity at Free Ink Day was creating relief prints on rubber templates a bit smaller than a postcard. The prints are made by carving a design into the rubber, coating the plate with ink, then pressing the plate onto a paper card. The biggest challenge in this process was coming up with a design, which leads me to suggest…

2) Plan to spend at least an hour designing, carving, inking and printing the kids’ creations. Free Ink Day spans three hours, but we came near the end in order to catch a special puppet show put on by Open Eye Figure Theatre. As a result, the kids were rushed in their printmaking, one squeaked in a print by the skin of her teeth, and it was semi-stressful scrubbing everyone’s hands clean in time for the show. Budget time for cleanup!

Special guests Open Eye Figure Theatre then presented, as part of its 2014 Driveway Tour, “The Amazing Cow Boat”. My kids loved the story of a little boy’s imagination gone wild at bathtime. After the show, the puppeteers allowed the kids to touch all the beautiful handmade puppets and sets. To find out where Open Eye Figure Theatre will be stopping next, click the link here.

Activities are open to all ages, but most kids 5 & under will need a significant amount of help with the printmaking tools. No advance registration is required.

Free Family Weekend Events List for June 27 – 28, 2015

No matter how long we’ve been residents of the Twin Cities it seems there’s always some hidden fun out there we haven’t discovered yet. Our family, for instance, hadn’t made the trip out to Carver Park Reserve in Victoria until last year when we decided to make an afternoon of it at the historic Grimm Farm Open House and the Lowry Nature Center. That’s just one of the ideas we’ve got on this weekend’s free family events list – as always, check our extensive Family Fun Calendar for more. Happy exploring!

Father’s Day Event — A Success!

Thank you all for coming out to see us at the Minnesota Transportation Museum this past Saturday for our Father’s Day Event.

It was great to meet you, hang out and have an all around good time.

Thanks for your patience before we took the bus tour while I was scrambling to get our food on board.  And thanks for your help with carrying things to the picnic tables!  Family Fun Twin Citians are some of my very favorite people in the whole world!

Enjoy these snapshots of the day.  They were taken by a Nokia 41 Mega Pixel PureView powered by AT&T.  While I am an iPhone girl all the way (and was super annoyed with this Windows Phone for most of the day), the pictures are pretty amazing!
